Wet stones on the pathway

That leads to the garden

Where you used to play for hours as a child

Blue and white sky through the green trees

Those were the only colors you knew,

Blue and green and white

Never azure or emerald or ivory

Those were colors princesses wore,

Not words people said

Now that you are older

You can see the shades of azure and sapphire

Through the shimmering, dappled emerald-and-gold leaves

And the ivory edges of the snow-white clouds

Like the colors in the big-kids’ crayon box

But can you still wear a crown?
