Kchan: This is yet another shonen ai story I came up with that is quite a bit darker than my other fics. Yes, its a murder/mystery/romance. I don't think there's that much cussing in here. Hurrah! Thats a first! Go me! :3 I've never written anything remotely related to murder/mystery so sorry if it doesn't really seem all that thrilling. I tried and thats what counts, right? Bah, whatever! Enjoy!
Warnings: Shonen ai (maleXmale relationships), crossdressing, blood, death, a tiny bit of drug use later on (not what you think), and maybe some other stuff later that I'll no doubt have to warn the readers about. The rating will stay at "Teen" unless someone really thinks it should be rated "Mature". I don't think its really that bad, even in the death scenes. I can't write gory stuff, so there. Xp
Sugar in the Blood
Chapter 1
No Boys Allowed
A boy in his mid-teens was sprawled across the floor of his sister's room. Every once in a while he'd get up, look in the full-length mirror leaning against wall, and fuss with his bright orange hair. He skeptically glanced at himself once again with his gleaming yellow eyes. He was built very thin, and not very tall; he didn't gain muscle easily and all the men in his family lacked in height.
A girl about the same age as him, his sister, watch the boy try to flatten a stray hair. She didn't share the same bright-coloured features as her brother. Instead, she had brown hair and dark eyes. And hated it, of course. She let out an exasperated heave of a sigh and rolled her eyes at her brother, "For the love of God, Mikan! You're acting like a girl! Quit messing with your hair!"
He stuck out his tongue at her and went back to fixing his hair, "Well, I AM going to an all-girls school, Akemi"
"You're so dumb" Akemi snapped, flipping her brown locks, "So you're the first boy at the school. Its not like they're going to make you wear a skirt!"
Mikan brushed off an imaginary speck of dust off his black suit and straightened his tie, "They'd better not. The only reason why I'm joining you're school is because I can't get the quality of education I want in a public school and-" he trailed off.
He had left the private all-boys school. Well, 'left' was a nice way to put it. He was kicked out for arguing with a priest about whether or not going to church was a waste of time. The school said they wouldn't put it on his record if Mikan just up and left without too much hassle.
Mikan didn't mind. He felt he won that arguement.
Now the only two options were public school or the private all-girls school that his sister attended. Having been fed up with the homonally charged males at the public school, he decided an all-girls school wouldn't be all that bad.
He once again straightened his tie.
"I told you to stop fussing!" Akemi fumed, and stomped over to her brother to yank the tie up as close to his neck as she could, "Now get your stuff and downstairs! Mum said we're going to leave in a little bit!"
.:--------------------------:.
On the long drive to the school, Mikan stared out the window. He counted the number of dead insects plastered to the window before he gave up and admitted to himself that he was thoroughly and hoplessly bored. He tried to go to sleep, but his sister was singing along to some CD she was listening to. He ended up staring into space. Akemi snapped him back to reality later when she grabbed his shoulders roughly and shook him.
"Look! There it is!!!" she enthused, pointing outside.
The school was enormous. It was Mostly white with gray paneling and was a good three stories tall. There was a high gate that surrounded the school. On it, near the entrance was a sign that read, St. Mary's- a school for girls". Mikan glowered at the white cross that was peeking out from behind the school, signifying the church that was there. Akemi on the other hand, was having the time of her life, excited to see her friends again after the summer away.
They all got out of the car, the siblings' mum leading the way into the school. The halls were pristine; probably just cleaned. So far, there were few students at the school. That day was just for registration and assigning dorm rooms. They made their way to a room that was marked "The Dean" and tentatively walked in.
An elderly lady was sitting at the desk, writing something. She looked up from her work to reviel sharp eyes, that held no trace of senility, despite her age.
"Hmmm...you must be the Kuroshima's...interesting, interesting..." she said, more to herself than the family in front of her. She flipped through a few pages in a file and pulled one out, scanning it quickly. She looked back up, focusing on Mikan, "Mikan Kuroshima, I'm guessing? Sit down, sit down"
He loosened the tie around his neck, feeling a little nervous under the womans gaze, "Umm...thank you but we've been sitting in a car for a few hours. If you don't mind, I'll just stand..."
She nodded tersely and continued, "You do realize you are the first male to enroll in our school, don't you? You know this is a girl's school..."
"Yes ma'am" he replied, "I ...erm...well wanted to get a better education than the public school system allows, but...I'm not exactly welcome at the all-boys school..."
The dean wait for a few seconds, giving Mikan a look that said she expected a further explanaition, but didn't pry. She said instead, "Thats well good and all, but St. Mary's has a reputation to uphold." she paused dramatically to straighten her blouse, "You see, we can't just let a boy enroll at our shcool..."
Mikan frowned, disapointment setting in. He didn't want to go back to public school. Maybe he'd drop school alltogether? "You only have to be 16 to legally drop out, right?" he thought.
She was still talking, "...we can however, enroll another girl without batting an eye". Mikan wondered why she was still staring at him when she said that. He got a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that told him something was up. The dean saw his confused look and said in a low voice, "You can enroll in this school, as long as everyone else believes you're a girl"
Mikan felt his blood freeze. Dress up as a girl? There was no way in Hell he was going to! He was even more infuriated to find is mother and sister approving the idea.
Akemi toyed with a lock of his bright orange hair, and looked him over, "You know...with a little lip gloss and some mascara, you'd look like a very cute girl" she giggled, "With a cute short hair cut!"
"That and he's thin and short enough to be a girl" his mother agreed, and looked skeptically at her son's chest, "...a flat-chested girl, but I think he'd be able to pull it off!"
Mikan was going extremely pale now at the thought of cross-dressing.
The dean smiled at him, her eyes still piercing, "So, what is it going to be? You go back to the public school system, or you dress up as a girl and go here and get the education you want?"
Mikan thought it over. Public schools really weren't to his taste, and he had plenty of bad experiences there. Here however, he'd get the education he wanted without the fear of a bunch of guys sneaking up and beating the crap out of him. Plus, he'd be surrounded by girls for a whole year! So what if he had to wear a skirt, right?
He made up his mind and looked straight at the dean, "I'll stay here"
.:---------------------------:.
Once his mother had left, the dean had fixed Mikan up with a room to himself (she refused to put him in a dorm room with real girls), and said that he would be excused from PE and swimming for obvious reasons. He dropped his bags and suitcase to the floor with a loud 'thunk' and scanned the room. The room was simple: a bed, a drawer to put his clothes in, and his own bathroom. He had also gotten the uniform, a plain gray skirt that went down to his knees, a white shirt, a small black tie, and a black jacket that he would wear once the weather got colder. He tried on the outfit and found that the shirt was loose enough to hid the fact that he was lacking in the chest area.
He came out of the bathroom to show his sister. She glanced at him, and stared at his legs, frowning, "You need to shave. The skirts not long enough to hide your whole leg"
"There's no way in Hell I'm going to shave my legs!" he snarled, trying to pull the skirt down a little further to hide his legs even more, "or anywhere else for that matter!"
"Oh? Is that so? You want to be the only 'girl' here with hairy legs?" Akemi asked, indifferently.
Mikan tried to think of a good excuse to get out of shaving, "C'mon Akemi! Its a guy thing! I can't just shave my legs for chrissakes!!! And no makeup!"
His sister didn't reply. She just held up a razor and shaving cream that she had pulled out of her suitcase. When Mikan didn't move to take them, she threw the shaving cream at him and yelled, "You WILL shave, and you WILL wear lip gloss and mascara or I swear to GOD I will tell every teacher here that you're really a guy and you'll go home before you can say 'cross-dresser'!!!"
He quickly gathered up the dropped shaving cream, snatched the razor from Akemi, and stormed off to the bathroom again. All the while, he cursed at his sistered and shouted out several death threats.
