Whacko Jacko, The Death Of My Cousin, and Why I Hate Pop Culture (Sort Of)
So any denizen of the US should know by now that Michael Jackson was found innocent. I have one question for you.
Who gives a shit?
I mean, seriously. Hoo-ha, a famous rich person got off for a crime. Tell me something new for a change. I mean, if Bill Clinton can get away with Waco, Bush can get away with a coke habit, O.J. Simpson can whack his wife, and the Enron guys can get off scot-free, I don’t expect much from the judicial system.
But the judicial system isn’t what I’m focusing on, really. What I’m talking about is pop culture.
Who cares about Britney’s new wedding? My only interest is in my bet on how long it’ll last. I have money on it. Gee, a Desperate Housewife might be having an affair? Homans, let’s watch it! Lives depend on knowing which male she’s going with!
Yes, I admit that I watch TV like a normal person. Sunday night comedies, like The Simpsons, King Of The Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad. But on the other hand, I’m not obsessive about it. When the show sucks, I change it.
Shows that suck:
Desperate Housewives
Grey’s Anatomy
House
CSI Anything
That one show about the blind cop dude
The O.C.
The ENTIRE WB lineup
Shows that don’t suck:
Boston Legal
Family Guy
The Simpsons
Blind Date
American Dad
King Of The Hill
I honestly don’t understand the American public. Shows that are totally lame get so much attention. But on the other hand, anybody who’s seen Network can understand. “We tell you whatever bullshit you want to hear.”
Look at local news. Death, death, rape, violence, miracle kitten saves family of ten and puts out fire, death, weather, sports, death, good night suckers. We’re obsessed with being entertained.
Nothing wrong with fun. Shit, I spend a lot of time sprawled out on my bed, surfing the ‘Net on my laptop. But I also deal with reality. I read the NY Times and Slate. I watch CSPAN. I try to get a job (and fail, usually.)
So what did the TV tell you to think today?
I suppose one can trace my resent towards the culture by the general apathy to the death of Adolfo Aguilar Zinser, a cousin of mine. (Z-Dub knows people in high places. Remember this.) ?id822490 is a good source of information on this man.
I had nothing but respect and love for my family. Powerful man in politics and a real sticker to his cards. And yet America thinks nothing of him at all.
Get off of your computers! Turn off the TV and the XM radio! GO outside and live a little. Many of you have families. I bet you know more about the shows you watch than you do about your family. Play a good old board game together and TALK, go on a drive (if you have the money; gas is pricey these days), do something with people that matter.
And turn off the Desperate Housewives and watch a bit of CNN and PBS. Please?
