Prologue
-
On the basketball court, opposing teams faced each other for the second half of the match. Onagawa High’s uniforms were red and black whilst Minekura High’s were green and silver. Makoto Tamiya sweated profusely. They had five minutes left to make up for the lost ten points. He could do it.
-
One of his teammates passed the ball to him, and as soon as he caught it, he prepared to shoot. He tossed the ball with all his strength and it sailed smoothly into the basketball hoop. His teammates cheered, slapping him high fives as they ran to their positions.
-
Again the ball was passed to him. He made one successful shot after another but after the third, he missed, the ball bouncing off the hoop. Time ran out with a long beep and Makoto swore as he looked at the scoreboard. They had only needed another three-point shoot to win the match.
-
“Onagawa High wins the Inter School Basketball Championship with a score of fifty against Minekura High’s forty-eight!” The commentator announced loudly. A deafening applause rang out.
-
Makoto sighed dejectedly, combing his fingers through his wavy dark green hair. He still could not believe that he lost the match. He was disappointed, frustrated and dejected all at the same time.
-
“I shouldn’t have lost, damn it!” He muttered under his breath.
-
Their team had practised so hard and he had let them down. Not that they blamed him, of course. Although he knew that, he still felt guilty. He walked towards his locker, his silver grey eyes cast pensively at the floor, one hand grasping his sling bag and the other stuffed into his pocket.
-
After winning all those matches, they had lost. One more match and they would have won the championship. Lost in thought, he walked into someone. Startled, he returned to reality. Looking down, he saw a girl with long blonde hair hurriedly picking up her books. Hastily, he kneeled down and retrieved the rest of them, handing them to her. He did not notice her appearance.
-
To him, she was just another student. He uttered an apology and without a second glance, he left. Hiromi stood up, staring after him in perplexity. I wonder if he was okay, she thought, he looked like he had a lot on his mind.
-
Then, she remembered his luxuriant dark green hair, the colour of the sea at night, the way his fringe fell over his right eye lovingly; the beautiful, ever-changing colour of his grey eyes. She blushed slightly.
