Prologue
Adrian Johnson sniffed and rubbed at where his father had hit him. Although he was only six, he imagined a time when he would take his mom and they would get as far away from his father as possible. Cutting through the park he stopped thinking as he heard someone whimper.
Without thinking he headed toward the sound. There he saw a girl around his age lying on her stomach trying to keep still.
“What are you doing?”
Five year old Elliot Walker turned her head slowly to look at him. “Hiding” she said, sounding as if she was trying not to cry. She laid her head onto her arms and watched him, still not getting up or moving any other part of her body. Adrian nodded knowingly as he sat down beside her, forgetting that his father had told him to go home.
“From your papa.” He said, understanding in his voice.
“Nuh-uh, from the Wilson brothers” she replied.
“Why are you crying then?”
“I’m not crying,” she sniffed, “but I think I felt a bug crawl on me.” Curious, Adrian leaned over and sure enough crawling around on Elliot’s back was the largest black fly he’d ever seen.
“Woah, it’s huge.” Elliot whimpered again and closed her eyes shut.
“Want me to get it off?” Adrian asked her. She opened one eye and looked at him.
“Aren’t you scared?”
“I’m not afraid of anything” he boasted closing his hand around the bug. Suddenly he leapt to his feet with a scream and began to dance around crying and yelling. He scared Elliot so much that she jumped to her feet and began to jump up and down crying.
Elliot’s father had heard the screams and rushed over to where the two children were howling. After checking to make sure both children were okay he sat down with a child on each knee and tried to make sense of what they were telling him. After Elliot had proclaimed Elliot a hero her father, trying not to smile solemnly shook Adrian’s hand.
“So what’s your name?” Elliot asked shoving her thumb into her mouth.
“Adrian, I’m six” he replied proudly. Elliot nodded.
“I’m Ellie, well its Elliot, but everyone calls me Ellie. My papa’s a hero just like you, he’s a soldier. And I’m five. So where’s your papa?”
Adrian made a vague notion behind him. “Him and mama are busy.” He told her. Elliot nodded again. Climbing out of her dad’s lap, Ellie grabbed Adrian’s hand and began pulling him behind her.
“Elliot where are you going?” her father called after her.
“To ask mama If I can keep him” she said smiling at him. Her father sighed.
“ Sweetie, you can’t keep him, his parents want him.”
“Finder’s keepers, losers weepers papa” she replied. She started to walk again but Adrian stopped her.
“I found you, so I can keep you?” he asked her. She frowned. As she opened her mouth to talk to him her father interrupted.
“No one is keeping anyone! You can’t own someone, now come, you can stay with us and then we’ll find your parents.”
With that he headed towards where his wife had a picnic set up. Elliot and Adrian had fallen behind as Adrian had stopped to show Ellie the bruise that was already showing from where his father had hit him.
“Doesn’t it hurt?” she asked, Adrian shrugged. Elliot leaned over and kissed the bruise, straightening she grinned at him. “All better now.”
Adrian smiled back, and then Elliot grabbed his hand and the two of them ran to where Elliot’s parents were sitting.
“Mama, meet Adrian, he’s my new best friend and he’s not afraid of anything.”
