Author’s notes: So, let’s see… A recent event has led to some rather strange occurrences. ‘Come What May’ by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor now makes me cry… so does ‘Only One’ by Yellowcard… and so does ‘Iris’ by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Noting the title of the poem, let’s play the Guess-what-happened-to-the-author game!

A Brokenhearted Me

---

I wear this smile so well

Don’t you love the glint in my eyes?

It’s so easy to pretend

I’m a master of disguise.

But take this smile away

Pull the mask, as well

You’ll see how I really feel

It’s not difficult to tell.

You’ll see the tears in my eyes

And the ache in my heart

You’ll see how hopeless I’ve become

As if I’ve been torn apart.

With this pain inside and out

It’s just so hard to be

And once this façade is torn away

You’ll see a brokenhearted me.
