Those Days

The year was 1993
A timid boy
Ignorant of the world
And all its evils

Still afraid of Santa
And finding him awake
Still afraid of the man
Who cuts off the tongues

Still that boy could
Watch most any horror movie
Without the slightest of cares

However, the worst thing was
He was ignorant of a girl
A girl about half his age
Who laid awake many nights

Listening to screaming
Screaming so loud
Her parents arguing,
Fighting, destroying

The boy didn't know of this
He didn't even like the girl much
They fought, too, and hurt each other
Ending with a smirk on his face

Little did he know
He'd grow up and love that girl
He wants everything perfect for her
Each and every day

His only regret is
He wasn't there for her
To hold her, care for her
During those days
Those days in 1993

A/N: Yeah... my grandfather somehow got me afraid of Santa. I used to think he'd do something when he'd come and find me awake.
As for the 'man who cuts off tongues,' it was January 1991(?) during the Persian Gulf war. My grandmother and a friend of hers were talking about it. Something came up about someone cutting off tongues of people who didn't did with him. It could have been Saddam Hussein or George Bush Sr. It could have been someone else for all I know. I just was scared for years to come and still makes me shiver to think of it now.
