She stands in the church foyer, surrounded by people and alone. Many of them smile at her and nod, but none ask how she is, how work is going. The one person at this church who pays more than the slightest attention to her is busy cleaning up coffee cups and muffin platters from Sunday School. She has been attending this church for four months, and only one person has bothered to learn her name.

She wants to scream at these people, scream for the sake of screaming. “What’s wrong with you? Can’t you see I need you? Can’t you see I need something to fill this void inside me? Oh, God, why am I so numb? Why?”

Instead she turns and leaves, walking back through the glass double doors and into the spring sunshine.
