that night – an elegy

the moon bared its beauty so well that night

and the sky was cloudy but not dim

in fact, the world in its sleep was so bright

as the vast darkness stretched out its limb

-

the sea was so calm on that very night

it never gave a gasp nor a sigh

but only reflected the sky’s own light

highlighting the waves that came right by

-

the horizon was an echo that night

endless was its power to capture

and to follow the night bird in its flight

through all its wild and tiring leisure

-

now i remember that night was the night

when he had lain himself to his rest

and then recalled if he’d lived his life right

and if he’d given god all his best

-

it was quiet; such a mem’rable night

in which a man has told his stories

stories of what he did, didn’t and might’ve

with his life and with all its glories
