I’d like to write a symphony
And name it after you
And I think I’d be alright for 16 measures or so
Or maybe more if it’s a good day
But I don’t think I could get much further than that, for whatever reason
And I never did like violins anyway
It would be nice if I painted a picture for you
I think I’d like it if I could do that
But I wouldn’t know what to paint or where to begin
And even if I did, the picture in my head would be better
Because that’s how it always seems to be
I wonder if the Mona Lisa came out the way da Vinci imagined her
I bet she didn’t
Maybe that’s why she’s got that coy little smile
She’s laughing at him
I’d like to give you a photograph of me
And put it in a nice frame
So you can put it anywhere you like and look at it when you’re lonely
But I can never find a perfect picture
That makes me look pretty enough
Or more importantly, that can make you see me how I want you to see me
I want to play something for you
I practiced it for ages
But it’s still not perfect even after all this time
Which doesn’t seem right
So I guess I won’t play anything for you
I put a flower in my hair today just because it looked nice. But that didn’t really have anything to do with you.
I really want to write a great tale
And in the front I’ll dedicate it to you
And all the people I’ve never met but know all the same
I have lots of little ideas and snippets
I know beautiful words that can turn your world to gossamer
And I know big brickish words too
Like “verisimilitude”
But I haven’t got any big ideas that seem fresh and exciting
That could make people laugh and cry and want more
I wanted to write you a lovely poem that rhymed and used techniques with fancy names like I learned about from my English teacher
And look what you got instead.
