The Smile-trailer

-

Everywhere she went,

She left a smile.

Happiness seemed to encircle her

Like a multitude of merrily humming bees…

Like millions of stubbornly unpoppable bubbles…

Like a messy crowd of twinkling silvery stars…

-

Her parents were wealthy

She travelled the world

Perhaps for the greater good of mankind

For in every place she set foot in

She brought light to sad people’s faces

And broadened the smiles of those already glad.

-

How contrary, then!

She herself didn’t look happy at all!

She was a dear little child:

Dark brown curls, adorable cheeks, rose-red lips…

But sad eyes looked upon all whom she met

Eyes fringed by long chestnut lashes, unnoticed hence.

-

A smile was never seen

In the smile-trailer’s mirror

How ironic that it should be this way!

She who gladdened was not glad –

In fact, she was crushed by their smiles;

Her wee heart sank at the sight of curved lips.

-

You see:

The smiles she saw were cruel.

The people were laughing at her –

Her and her grave, precocious ways.

She just couldn’t make them understand

She didn’t mean to be funny at all.
