Author’s Notes: For those of you that aren’t Holocaust-savvy, Kirstallnacht was basically the big movement that started the whole thing. The poem should tell you the rest.

Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass)

---

Screams echo

Ringing with desperation and fear

And people are fleeing

As the soldiers march near.

Man, woman, and child are murdered

How the crimson blood flies

Mixed with the cold caress of night

And victorious cries.

Flames devour everything

It’s hard to look away

As everything we’ve ever known

Is plunged into disarray.

Why has God chosen us?

What have we done?

To deserve this torture

That flies from the gun?

No answer comes

We’re all on our own

God’s chosen people are doomed

Forsaken and alone.

We cower in the alleyway

Wishing this terror would surpass

And all we can do is pray

On this night of broken glass.
