The Future
A young man sat, staring pensively up at the moon. The magical world was is chaos. Evil had done the unthinkable: it had gone into the past and at this very moment was changing the outcome of the future. After all his family had done to keep the world in light, evil always found a way to turn things in their favor.
“Eric, are you in here?” an old man stepped into the room.
The young man, Eric, swung around. His face was lit by the moonlight coming in through the window. Dark curls of ebony were shading his fair skin and his beautiful golden eyes were nearly black with despair.
“Grandfather”, he whispered. The old man sighed and walked over to his grandson.
He knew what troubled the boy. The dark warlocks had killed many of their family; the last defense of the light was quickly dying out.
“You know what we have to do, what I have to do,” Eric said. “I have to go back to warn the past of what evil has planned. It’s the only way things can be put right. If the two most powerful families of the light were never to unite then evil will destroy us. That’s why they went into the past, they needed to make sure mother and father would never meet, never fall in love, and most importantly never bring our families together. If I can warn my parents then we can avoid all this…pain. I have to go back and gain my mother’s trust.”
“Eric this it too dangerous, if he suspects what we are about to do they will kill us. You are right though; no one could have guessed what was going to happen. We must change it. You must be careful in the past; you have to make you mother and father figure out what is going to happen. Simply telling them can change too many things.” The only man smiled softly, “I also know my daughter will not trust you. Emma is too cautious. You must gain her trust without telling her who you are or where you come from.”
“I miss her so much…,” Eric whispered, and then an expression of hope came over his face. “I can change her fate! She wasn’t supposed to die so soon. If she had only known there was a betrayer then she would be here with us right now. The light needs her, I need her. I have to go back to where this all began.”
“Eric remember you must be careful. This must be done delicately. I know the spell to send you into the past, but is must be cast at midnight, one hour from now. How will you gain your mothers trust? I know my daughter and she does not trust easily. You will be going back to when she was in high school. You can enroll as another student. She will know what you are, she can sense your magic. She taught you everything she knew, use the knowledge.”
A part of Eric was looking forward to getting to know his mother while they were the age. Another part of Eric was scared, getting to know her would also mean more pain for when he want back to where she would be dead. He could change that, but so many things could go wrong. He could only do his best, which might be enough.
The air around them suddenly turned cold and Eric couldn’t suppress a shiver. “They know what we are planning. He knows,” he whispered shakily.
“Come Eric we must hurry! As soon as the spell is cast you must jump into the portal. They will hear my spell and in mere seconds we will be surrounded. Do not delay. They will not harm me, they come only for you. We must get to the mansion. The spell can only be cast there.”
“I will transport us there and save time, Grandfather,” Eric said with a bit of a wicked smile. He knew very well how the other man felt about being transported. Transporting is a gift no one could really describe. The body disappears and instantly appears at the destination of the person’s choice. Many people, like his grandfather, hated the feel- for it felt like they were on an extremely fast roller coaster. It was a rare gift and Eric used it often. Without waiting for his grandfather’s reply he grabbed the mans’ hands and without so much as a sound they vanished.
They reappeared outside an immense mansion, Eric’s old home before evil had taken it over.
“I hate it when you do that,” grumbled Eric’s grandfather. “Feels like I ate something alive and its moving around in my stomach.” With a shake of his head the old man set himself back to rights. “We must hurry now.”
The two kept to the dark and were nothing but shadows to anything passing buy. The mansion had been beautiful once, but with no one caring for it dust covered nearly every surface and spider webs were in every corner. They quickly and quietly made it to the heart of the mansion: the library. The floor was a huge pentagram and the older man made hurried motions for Eric to stand in the center while he recited the spell.
Eric and his grandfather shared one last look and steeled themselves for what they were about to do.
May the power of the witches’ rise
To change the future
We go into the past
With this spell cast
I send this one back
With this portal open
I summon the power
Of all that is good
I send this one back
Where it all began…
With these words said a swirling portal appeared within the pentagram, just as quickly men started appearing around them; warriors of darkness. They were too late to stop them. Eric stepped into the portal just as he arrived. Eric savored the horror on the man’s face, the one man who had ruined and betrayed his family, his uncle.
