Characters:

Linzi Avery - Strong minded and caring but she has a lack of time management skills.

Jess Bellings- Courageous and born leader but is a little over controlling.

Angie Dylan- Brave and a quick thinker but she is not always clear headed.

Laura Gem- Smart and beautiful but has problems understanding sarcasm.

Niky Ingles- Very good at building and creating but shy and quiet.

Cara Lin- A hard worker and can get things done but her compassion for perfection takes time.

Emily Paine- Very book smart and loves to join in the fun but has many fears.

Kat Thomas- A daring experimenter (with magic) and good friend but is very accident-prone.

Ali Ville- is a person who looks ahead and is a thoughtful friend but is sometimes a little drifty.

Summer Vacation
Scene 1: An Adventure Begins

Setting- A small lemon and orange grove and the sun is beginning to rise; Laura is sitting in a tree, Linzi is sitting under a tree, Niky is using a tree as a pillow, Jess is walking around, Cara is lying on her side in the dirt, and Emily is lying on her back in the dirt.

Laura’s Voice in the Background: That summer was the summer we were supposed to go our separate ways. We so desperately wanted to stay together but summer was tearing us apart. Summer is thought of as a time to go on an adventure and loosen up. An adventure is exactly what we wanted. But we forgot that old phrase, “Be careful what you wish for.”

Linzi: (moaning) What time is it?

Emily: (checks her watch and rolls over) 4:55 A.m., on the first day of summer.

Laura: (yawning) But it is the first of only two days before we don’t see each other for at least a month.

Linzi and Emily: (glare at Laura)

Laura: (moaning) But the sun’s almost up.

Linzi: (looks at Emily) But it’s not up.

Emily: (closes her eyes) Who in their right mind would wake us up before 7:30 in the morning.

Niky: (shifting slightly) Emily, you do realize that you can sleep until noon any other day?

Cara: (stretching) Of course she does.

Jess: (sits down against a tree) When did you wake up?

Cara: (turns over) When Laura pulled me out of bed this morning.

Linzi: (yawning) Where are Kat, Ali, and Angie?

Angie: (trips over a rubber tube and lands on her hands and knees) Ah shit that hurt!

Kat: (trudges up the hill) Are you all right.

Angie: (standing up) Sure.

Linzi: (closing her eyes) Speak of the devil.

Laura: (climbs out of the tree) Why?

Linzi: (glances at Emily) The person who deprived us of coffee this morning is…

Emily: (sits up) No coffee

Laura: (nodding) No coffee

Emily and Linzi: (moaning) Evil

Ali: (carrying two drink holders and a mug) Coffee anyone?

Emily: (running to Ali) Ali Ville you’re the best person in the whole wide world.

Kat: (stirring something in a pan) I’ll have mine after I finish.

Angie: (walks over to Kat) What are you making?

Kat: Something to bring adventure.

Niky: (turning over) what kind of adventure?

Kat: I don’t know.

Emily: (sipping coffee) Well if you don’t know then how do you know how to make it?

Kat: Luck. Pure luck.

Ali: (handing out last few mugs) Sure. Luck will keep Niky from Virginia. Luck will keep Emily from camp in Maine. Luck will keep Linzi from Tennessee.

Angie: Luck will keep me from Hawaii and you from England. It will keep Ali from spending the summer at home and Cara from going to that ASB trip to Berkeley. And of course luck will keep Laura from Minneapolis, shopping city of the world.

Emily: O.k. someone got a little carried away there.

Kat: (sets up 3 mirrors, places a ring of liquid inside it) Come on. We might as well try my little experiment out.

Jess: (stepping into the ring) How is this going to work scientifically?

Cara: (sighs and steps into the ring) It’s magic.

Jess: Yeah right

Everyone gets into the ring

Kat: Laura the matches please.

Linzi: (looks at Laura) You knew about this?

Laura: (hands Kat a match)

Cara: This can’t be safe.

Kat: (lights the match and drops it on the liquid)

The fire lights around the liquid ring light reflecting in the mirror

Cara: This really can’t be safe.

Surroundings go black winds rushing loudly

Angie: (screaming) Oh my god! Oh my God!

Jess: (yelling) Don’t Panic!

Emily: (screaming and crying) We’re all going to die!

Laura: (yelling) She said don’t panic!

Linzi: (shouting and shoves Emily towards Laura) See this? This is Emily not panicking!

Kat: (shouting) It’s all right! I see the end of the tunnel.

Ali: (crying) Oh my god it’s the light. Emily’s right we’re going to die.

Cara: (yelling) We’re not going die. I see something forest like.

Emily: (still crying) We’re going to die!

8 girls land in soft grass Ali lands in a tree

Setting- A forest like area, with large patches of soft grass. All 9 girls are lying flat on their back.

Linzi: (standing up rubbing her arm) That hurt.

Emily: (looking around) Where the hell are we?

Cara: (opening her eyes) Whoa! This is kind of cool.

Kat: (standing up and counting the girls) Where is Ali?

Ali: (in a distance yelling) HELP! HELP! I’M UP IN A TREE! HELP!

Laura: (looks around at the trees) Which tree?

Angie: (sighs and stands up and puts on a fake smile) Pick a tree. You’ll have a one in 3000 chance of being right.

Ali: (screaming) You’re standing right under me.

Jess: (climbing) I’m coming.

Emily: (looks over to Kat) Where the hell are we?

Kat: (looks around) Well it was supposed to open up a wormhole. I’m not sure where it was supposed to lead.

Linzi: (sighing) Great This is just great. You realize that we could be anywhere in space.

Ali: (drops to the grass and moans) Ow.

Jess: (climbs down smoothly) Or time.

Emily: (moaning) What are we going to do?

Jess: (sitting next to Ali in the grass) I say we allot. Analyze our surroundings, come back here, confer our data, and draw a conclusion of our position in the space-time continuum.

Everybody but Jess and Cara’s mouth drop

Linzi: English please.

Cara: (standing up) She means we should split up. Figure out what’s around us, come back to this spot, compare what we found, then with what we found figure out where we are.

Emily: (messaging her eyes) Sounds simple enough.

Ali: (stands up) I have another plan. We stay here, Kat creates another batch of whatever that was, we go back home and there is no chance of getting lost.

Angie: (leans against a tree) Two problems with that plan. First of all, it’s a wormhole right? Which means it could lead to more than one place. Problem 2 is that it might take a week to get the ingredients to recreate the wormhole.

Cara: (straightens up) Let’s have a vote.

Jess: All right. Let’s vote. Ali and I won’t vote because we came up with the plans. Linzi?

Linzi: (sits down) I’m in favor of Jess’s plan.

Emily: (sitting up) I don’t want to die of starvation so I’m for Jess’s plan.

Angie: You know my output.

Laura: (stands up) I want to go home. I’m for Ali’s plan.

Cara: I’m for Ali’s plan because we won’t be able to find this spot again.

Niky: (still laying down) I’m for Ali’s plan this spot has enough to keep us alive for a while.

Kat: I’m for both of your plans.

Jess and Ali look quizzically at Kat

Kat: (sits in the grass) My idea is that we split in 2 groups. Ali and Jess will lead the groups. Ali’s group stays here and makes a camp. Jess’s group leaves analyzes surrounding and gathers food and supplies for the wormhole.

Cara: All in favor.

All girls raise their hands

Cara: It’s unanimous then. Kat’s plan wins.

Jess: (stands up) All right… I’ll take Linzi, Emily, Kat, and Angie.

Ali: (stands up as well) Okay that leaves me with Laura, Niky, and Cara.
