Less Than Fortune

Today I saw the blind man,
old bones and tired eyes,
laughing like a child, when he heard me passing by.

Today I saw a poor man,
disheveled clothes torn and frayed,
grinning like a fool, as my way past him I made.

Today I saw a burnt man,
skin grotesque, black and blue,
smiling quite contently at me as I walked through.

Today I saw three crazy men,
smiling through misery.
And I felt my own fat wallet,
thick and comforting.
I smiled not as I passed these men,
and pitied their misfortune.
Until I saw what I’d become;
A Devil, crying, lurking in the gloom.
