Written after a visit to the homestead where my maternal grandmother was born. If you've ever driven on a highway out on the prairie, you've seen one like it. Please review!

Out in a field
stands a lonesome
old house:
grey and leaning
into the wind.

The shingles creak
and shriek
in the breeze.

Sheep and cows
have run inside.

But the bones
are still there,
bleached by sun
and wind and rain,
putting down roots
in the dark prairie soil.
