Oblivious

subtly trying to impress
but she's no different from the rest
she laughs, and smiles, and your heart soars
she turns to him, it's on the floor

the night goes on, and still you try
it's obvious she likes this guy
but in your heart you hold this flame
that somehow she'll see through his game

you play along, you joke, you leap
through hoops while in your mind you weep
you struggle and you look ahead
you try to show no hint of dread

they press together, all but unseen
you can't keep staring at the screen
in pain, forlorn, you hang your head
while faking smiles at what they've said

inside you cannot stand to stay
but what comes out your mouth? "Okay"
you'll sacrifice, and die again
while eyes on each the other's trained

when you get home, what do you do?
you write some worthless rhymes or two.
the words will never quite express
how badly you are hurt, distressed

and deep inside, you know the truth.
e'en if she read the rhymes by you,
at best she'd be just pushed away,
and not compelled to make you pay.

despite it all, you write, and pray
that ne'ertheless she will someday
come back and smile to your face
and say the past is all erased.
