Little and Girl have been best friends forever!
They met even before they were born, in their Mother’s womb. They lived together as one. When they were born, they were named Little and Girl. Girl always aspired to be something more, without Little tagging along. But Little had other ideas, even though she was immature, she loved Girl always, and didn’t want to see her go.
One day, while they were peacefully living together and playing a friendly game of pick-up sticks, Little was kidnapped right out of Girl’s lap by Time.
Time was an evil, evil villain! It took away all that you never want to see go, in the blink of an eye, just-like-that fast. It was dark and scary, but it could also bring good tidings. Some love it at times, and just want it to keep coming and coming… But others, just like Girl, never want to see anything, like her beloved Little, be stolen from her… so soon…
Girl decided to go out looking for little. She searched high and low, in all of the wrong places. She asked Playground where Little had gone, and See-Saw told her,
“Why, Girl, you can’t play here anymore!”
“But, why? Oh why, Why can’t I play on my friends anymore?” Girl said this because she loved the playground equipment dearly.
“Because,” Slide told her, “Little isn’t with you anymore. Now you’re just Girl. And a girl like you shouldn’t be playing here with all of the other Little’s!”
By this time, Girl was very frustrated! All she wanted was to play with her old friends again and to see Little just one last time. Girl thought she could find the answer to her missing counterpart from Tree house.
“Tree house!” Girl shouted from the ground, to the way-up-high house-in-the-sky… “Have you seen Little?”
“Why, yes! I have!” Tree house said, and Girl grew very excited. “She left with Time, but I cannot help you find her, since all who are Little love to climb my branches and swing from my tires.” So Girl thanked him for the lead-on, and went on her way.
Eventually, she ended up at Time’s house. She knocked on the door, very softly, and very politely…
Time then did the strangest thing! It just opened the door in a flash, and dropped out Little right on Girl’s feet! She embraced her sister, for she had missed her so much. She had planned out exactly what they would do. They would sell the remainder of their Girl Scout mint cookies together, then the remainder of them they would have a tea-party with… and they would invite See-Saw and Slide and Tree house and Playground and all of their friends.
But, Girl noticed that something was wrong. Little wasn’t… Little anymore. Little had been subject to Time for so long… that Little had become Life herself.
Girl was surprised at the changes she noticed in Little. Little didn’t want to play dress-up anymore. She didn’t want to see-saw on See-Saw, or slide down Slide, or play on Playground, or chase around the boys, or even swing from Tree Houses’ branches! Girl was so sad. She just wanted her old friend that she missed so much back. Then, after Girl had begged Little to play with her for the hundredth time, Little said to her,
“Girl, we go hand-in-hand in the beginning. When you were born, I was born right along with you! But my purpose in your life has been fulfilled. Time had told me so. Time told me that you had been playing with Experience so much, that you didn’t need me anymore. And when he told me that, boy, I believed it! Time is right, with Experience around, you don’t need to be known as Little & Girl. You are just a Girl, now. Experience has done that to you…
I will always be in your memories, Girl. All of those fun times we had, remember? The Tree House and Playground? But now, I am Life. I am Change. I will still be with you, but now you need to learn for yourself, since I can’t be your crutch anymore…
Everyone has loved you because you were with me, Little. But now, you are Girl. Just Girl, Only Girl. Nothing more, yet nothing less. Soon, I will be Grown-Up. Just like how you will be. You never know when your time to change will come.”
By this time, Girl was very, very sad. Yet, inside, she felt happy.
Girl felt happy because she, with the help of experience, had grown from Little. Little, with the help of experience, had become Change for Little Girl.
Time always knew this was coming, with the help of Fate. Fate knew that Little Girl couldn’t be Little anymore, and that it was time for Change to appear, since Girl was in love.
And so, Girl, and her new friends, Changes, Time, Fate, and Love, skipped off into the sunset, because you are never too old to do the things you enjoy.
Girl suddenly felt very happy, because she was growing, and she was glad.
