A photograph doesn’t really
capture the moment
or present a perfect memory.
The photos of happy families
sold in frames and black and white
(where the parents are impossibly young
and the children impossibly gap-toothed
and the teenagers impossibly blonde),
are full of smiles that are just
a little too bright.
And the photos of happy families
that sit on mantelpieces
(that show early Christmas mornings and first bikes
and entangled arms)
are always in the past
and you’d never know that the parents
got a divorce three years later.
