Chapter Two
"Adelan, my son, this is Dawn," She began in a clipped voice, "She is my hand picked candidate to ah...succeed me if you continue to prove unworthy. Tonight you will introduce her to the members of society at a party I am throwing as...your long lost sister, or whatever other story you come up with, just make sure nothing gets sticky in the future from anything you say today."
"Yes, Mother," Adelan responded with a bow.
"I don't feel particularly hungry today, so I'll leave you two to get to know each other." Mrs. Denford finished and pushed back her chair.
When they had finished, they sat across each other for a few minutes, then Adelan smiled and broke the silence.
"So...Dawn. I like your name. Simple. One syllable. A name that sounds steely and means business. So tell me, Dawn, how long exactly have you known my mother?" Adelan questioned slyly.
"Longer than you would suspect," She replied, "So give me some simple facts about yourself."
"Okayyy. My name, as you know, is Adelan Denford, I am twenty-four, I had a somewhat surpressed childhood under the thumb of my mother, nothing worthwhile there, I enjoy poker, American football, and archery." He answered irritatedly as the noticed how the one being questioned just became the questioner.
"How's your er...situation?" She continued asking, "I mean like, your job, do you have any best friends, girlfriend, henchmen...? I would like to know about those close to you."
"Very straight forward," Adelan said with a stony face. "You'll find out about them as they...surface. So, got any plans for the future?" He shot back.
"I plan to start studying at Delaney." Dawn said smugly. "And you?"
An impossible plan if it hadn't been for my dear mother's money, Adelan thought fiercely. But his anger soon gave way to another emotion. Dawn must be pretty smart to be accepted, and despite his ego, he was impressed, for Delaney did not accept unworthwhile students no matter how rich they were...but of course, without the rich, clever was, unfortunately, useless.
Adelan was snapped out of his thoughts as he remembered that Dawn had asked him the question back.
"Me? I don't know yet, I just graduated from Nielson a few months ago, and do not plan on continuing my studies any further." He said.
"Moving on...give me some details of people that's going to be at this...party." Dawn inquired.
"There is no details. You'll come to get used to them. Just smile, shake hands, and get yourself known, but definately do not do anything drastic or abnormal." Adelan replied.
"But -"
"You know what," Adelan cut her off, "I have somewhere to get to...I'll talk to you later."
With that, he stood up and left.
