“It hurts.”
He whispered.
To no one.
“That’s what love does.”
I sighed
Trying to get a song
out of my mind.
Play
Rewind
Repeat.
He looked up at me
With teary eyes.
He was young.
We are all young sometimes.
He was a child,
But he was too old to cry.
“I can’t live like this.”
I hummed a tune.
To block the song
“Sure you can. It gets easier each time.”
“Each time you fall in love?”
“Each time it breaks your heart.”
We both shook our heads
From side to side.
He denied his heart would heal
I told him the crack wasn’t real
“You don’t know how I Feel!”
His tears turned to ice
“No. I’ve forgotten.”
I said with a smile
Silence followed
The song echoed stronger.
“Will I?”
“Huh?”
“Will I forget?”
he asked again.
I looked at him
and heard the silence.
The song was gone,
“Do you want to?”
The ice changed to light
The light changed to fire
And the fire turned to fog
“No.”
I nodded
This child was wise.
Am I the fool?
I heard him hum
A familiar song
As I walked away
There was nothing more to say.
I walked towards the silence.
