Happy endings… what are these? What can be considered as a happy ending? Man falls in love with a woman or visa versa, they make the plans and then end their story with a blissfully white wedding. Is this a happily ever after? What about those little pink bunnies hopping around without a care in the world? Bah… All good tales start off good but then there’s the adventures that take place that are not so nice that people never see or choose not to venture into knowing except those who are involved who sometimes want to be on the opposing end of the stick. Well, this is one woman’s happily ever after.
The world as human civilization knew it crumbled under their racing feet against time to escape the horrors that came to life that only existed in nightmares. Those nightmares that you pray never come to light. Only… thanks to one man’s minor accident, all those prayers came to a screeching halt to alter to survival of the fittest… or in this case the larger wallets. Ships were prepared with frantic haste for those worthy enough to take that flight into space to find new grounds in which to call home. Mutations were beginning to birth in the streets from diseases mixing and mingling in a desired dance to conflict as much as it could. The dead would no longer stay deceased, coming back into formation to take down those in their decaying eyes not worthy to live. Buildings crumbled overnight and banks were broken into for one last attempt to achieve their thriving goal of continuation.
One woman lined up for the few last ships still remaining, skin streaked with tears from a variety of emotions, still being able to hear the screaming and wailing of those behind the high chain linked fences that separated those few from succeeding and dying.
“One at a time. One-at-a-time, or we will shoot to kill!” several men screamed into the crowd, wearing their camouflage outfits to show their superiority and power over those less fortunate.
Patiently waiting, the woman held herself, hoping that soon this place would be growing farther away from her along with the dreadful memories. Her days a week ago had been wonderful until the alarms sounded and her husband issued her out the door, telling her that he had to go into work to help with the contamination. Being a First Sergeant this was his task and responsibilities.
“If I don’t make it, take this. It will get you to safety. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier,” placing his hands to her cheeks and foreheads together, the loving husband kissed her goodbye one last time before running to his car. He had known for two weeks, sworn to secrecy to prevent mass chaos. Looking down into her hands, a bundle of objects had been placed there. Slowly she opened the package only to cry, screaming the three words of their love in the already loud air.
The last time she even had a glimpse of him was when the gates to the ships opened to emit passage for those few. A loud bang came at her window, drawing her attention to the crumbling man; a stifle of sobs could only be heard within the car. He turned into one of those things…
“Ma’am, we can’t keep the others waiting. I need your pass,” shaken from the horrendous memories, the woman handed over the badge that belonged to the late First Sergeant Williams.
“I’m sorry, ma’am. He was a great man,” one of the soldiers consoled.
“He still is.”
When the woman got onto the plain, more soldiers of the once United States moved her up the ladders to capsules that held the passengers. Strapping her in, he closed the thick glass door where she lay, wondering… wanting…
Minutes later, the ship vibrated to life. Clutching their hearts, the voyagers began again their prayers, feeling the tremors start out large until the slowly passed. Within each casing, speakers generated the voice of the captain stating that the hyper sleep would soon be activated for their two year trip to a new planet. The widow placed a hand to the glass in front of her, tears still streaming down her face as the white lights on the other side slowly faded. A hand was placed on her belly, a smile curling on her lips at the prospect of a better future.
Two years and eight and a half months later…
“Get her into the emergency care! She’s gonna pop any second!” a nurse pushed a hospital bed down the thick corridors of signs that stated “Under Construction”. The woman on it screamed in pain as the contractions became closer and harsher with each passing moment.
Ten scrutinizing hours of pain, the time finally arrived to deliver the child within her. The doctors already informed her of the slim chance of survival for the newborn considering it was a preemie. The two years of hyper sleep still made it a miracle that the baby survived this long and hopes were made that no deformities took place.
“I don’t care! This child is the last thing I have left! You will make it live, dammit!”
Two hours later after complications, the physicians scurried away from the room, leaving the mother crying for at least a glimpse of her new gift. The more she pleaded the faster the nurses moved to get her health back in order. Weeks went by with still no signs of her child with promises of tomorrow… maybe tomorrow. Finally, one day they entered her tiny room with no sunlight, no glimpses of the once blessings within the confines of the blue room, one nurse and doctor a piece entered the room with smiles on their faces. Moving next to the bed, they handed the expectant guardian her bundle of joy.
“Look at her eyes, ma’am. It’s sensational. We’ve never seen anything like it. Plus her hair is a silver shade.”
The tiny girl in her arms barely opened her eyes to reveal Caribbean aqua colored eyes as she yawned and gazed at her holder before falling asleep again. As the nurse had stated, her daughter did have silver hair. The only explanation that the doctors could give was that when in hyper sleep, the baby didn’t get enough pigment to the necessary areas, thus leading to the unusual colors along with her pale skin.
“What will you name her?” the doctor curtly asked.
“Angelique.”
A/N: Thanks, Ballerina with a Gun… you kind of inspired this. Btw, this is a totally new area to me. I normally don’t write futuristic things. So if I don’t clarify something or miswrote it, please let me know! Thanks for reading!
