Five Years Before
“I don’t see why they make us go to school at the end of the year anyway. We are seniors, we should get some kind of privileges.” Melody complained. My twin sister and I were driving to school in one of the hottest days of Philadelphia summers. Melody and I were the exact copy of one another except for hair and eye color. Melody was a strawberry-blonde with green eyes, whereas I was a brunette with blonde streaks and haze-gray eyes.
“Symphony! Wake up, you can’t daydream and drive!” She yelled.
“I’m not day dreaming, I hear you say the same thing everyday. You have been complaining about having to come to school since third marking period.” I replied calmly.
“That’s because I’m going to talk about this until they change it.” She said as she turned her back on me, as much as she could in the passenger seat.
“You can talk about it until you go blue in the face. They are not going to change the rules anytime soon Mel. You cannot think that you are the only one who doesn’t agree with this. There are dozens of seniors in our school, who want to protest or something but they are afraid to because if don’t we miss practice and we won’t get our tickets.”
“Well just because it isn’t going to change doesn’t mean I can’t complain.” She mumbled. Complaining was Melody’s strong suit. She could complain up a storm but not change a thing. She loses her steam once you prove one flaw in it. That’s another place where we are different. I like proving people wrong, if you say I cant do something, that makes me want to do it more
I parked the car that our parent bought us in with the staff cars; they would never know the difference because it was just as nice as theirs. My parents were music producers so money was never scarce. Their love of music is evident in our names.
We walked into the building together and went off to our separate groups of friends. We both were pretty popular but the groups were a little different. She hung with the rebels, kids who got in trouble for cutting class and vandalizing the school. I hung with pretty low-key kids, smart but not too smart and not snobby. Just average. I was looking for one person in particular but I could not find them, so I just went to my locker.
My locker was right next to one of my best friend locker, her name was Laura. She is about my height and size, so just like me and my sister, she and I can trade clothes. I am a tad bit quieter than her, but we both can be loud when it counts. Laura is a very pretty girl she has long brown curly hair and in the summer it gets a reddish tint. She has lovely blue eyes that get a gold ring around them when she is happy. Laura is dating one of my sisters’ friends named Will. Will is a punk rocker; he has a lip piercing along with an eye piercing. He has his black hair spiked. I hate to admit that he has a body; he is only a few inches taller than Laura and me. We are both 5’5 and he is 5’9.
I continued to gather my things for my first two classes out of my locker alone, I almost dropped my books when I felt someone’s hands slip around my waist.
“Hey baby . . .” Antonio said. Antonio is my boyfriend of eight months. We have been together since September. He is Italian and has jet-black hair that comes a little past his shoulders. At 6’2 he is about 190 lbs. He has chocolate eyes that change to hazel when it gets warm, so now that it is, May his eyes are hazel.
“Hey babe.” I said as I turned around and gave him a kiss. He grabbed my books and began walking me to class. We talked about each other’s weekend. He is a senior like I am so we both will be graduating. He gave me a kiss on my cheek and I walked into my class. When I got there the class was full, everyone was already there sitting down and talking. I felt some kind of way because normally we wait for everyone to get to school and we walk to class together. I know it was petty but it’s the principle. So I sat by myself in the back of the class, I pulled out my mp3 player and the book I was currently reading and tuned the world out. About five minutes into the book I was interrupted by a tapping on my shoulder. I looked up and it was Laura and Carlos. Carlos was our Latino friend, I always thought he had a thing for Laura but she always denied it along with him.
“Hey why are you sitting over here alone?” Laura asked.
“I didn’t want to interrupt.” I replied.
“Sorry for not waiting at the lockers for you but um… well my back was hurting and all . . .” She said while looking off. My head snapped up and I looked at her as she turned her head blushing.
“What? You did it?” I yelled.
“Don’t be so loud. That’s what we were over there talking about. I tried to call you last night and tell you but you didn’t answer your phone last night.”
“My battery died, come on I want details.” I said while pulling her down in the chair beside me.
“Well, last night me and Will were going to go to the movies, but what we wanted to go see was sold out. So I went back to his house. At first we were just playing video games and watching TV but then, like, we started making out and he asked me was I ready and like, I said yeah. Oh my god Symph, it was crazy, he was so gentle with me! It didn’t even hurt all that bad. I swear I love him to death girl!” She exclaimed. She looked so happy. Her and Will had been dating for two years off and on. To me it seems like they are meant to be together but the butt heads at times and neither one of them wants to back down. They are dealing with it a little better, right now they have been together for seven months and that’s a record for them.
“I’m so happy for you Laura! I knew it was going to happen soon! Do you regret anything?” I asked.
“Not a thing, well actually I do . . .”
“What?” I asked getting worried, thinking they did not use protection or something.
“We only did it for an hour and thirty minutes!” She laughed.
We both started laughing as everyone started making their way over to where we were sitting.
“So you know what happened now?” Daneen said.
Well, let me introduce the rest of my friends. Daneen is our friend and she has all AP classes. She’s the smartest one out of all of us. She has skin a shade darker than caramel, with thick, long auburn hair. She has the best hourglass figure we all want her shape. Her and Carlos are very close, along with Bridget. Bridget was also an AP student. She was a Cambodian American. Her mother was native of Cambodia and her father was a black boxer. She was so beautiful in my opinion. She was the most quiet one out of all of us.
“Yeah, she finally filled me in.”
We all tried to make some plans for this weekend failing miserably because everyone wanted to do something different and we kept goofing off. Finally the bell rung and we all escaped the class.
