Bright Avalon
by Shauna Houser
Bright Avalon, the shining isle
Hid within enchantment’s guile.
Home to tall immortal fair
Of starlit eye and silvered hair.
No mortal foot shall tread upon
The misty shores of Avalon.
And yet, upon the rippled seas,
The shadowed boughs, the gilded eaves
Of ancient wood and Aelfin bower
Merge upon the midnight hour.
‘Tis then hapless, mortal eye
Should sometimes happenstance to spy
The splendid light of Fae allure,
Their revelry upon the shore.
And after, ‘til their dying day,
Such luckless mortals pine away,
Forevermore enthralled by sight
Of lovely dancers in the night,
And hopeless dreams to tread upon
The hallowed shores of Avalon.
