Hannah gingerly reached her hand under the back of her shirt and felt the long, but shallow wounds on her back that bled sluggishly. Leo was already tearing strips of cloth from a spare blanket that had been thrown into the corner. It was fairly clean, or cleaner then anything else that was in the room. He shook the dirt from it as her continued tearing it, ripping at the edges with his teeth. Angelo grimaced at this. The tearing made a horrible noise that made shiver run up everyone's spines and made their teeth ache.
Leo helped take of Hannah's shirt before he tied the strips around her back and chest. Angelo turned, embarrassed by his friend's nakedness. Leo shook his head at his friend's reaction. There were things more important right now then keeping someone covered. When Hannah got her shirt back on she turned to look at Angelo. He was sitting in a far corner going through their box of food. There were some old cans of Spaghetti-o's, a few boxes of dry, uncooked pasta, and a couple of individual sized pudding cups. They were starting to run out of food. She estimated that at this time in two days they would be out of food.
Leo watched her worried as she thought. She had never been know to be a stable person, and for the past four days they had been in this god-forsaken basement, he had been watching her closely for signs of a mental breakdown, or whatever it was people always thought she was having. He had once heard a very nosy aunt of his say once, “She's a loony all right, poor girl. It's not her fault really. It's that father of hers whose crazy as a bedbug. And what of her mother? What's anyone doing getting knocked up like that from him? I mean honestly, she needs to learn to keep her legs closed, or at least open them for the right people. All she's done is borne an unstable person into the world. And thats all we need, more crazy people....” She didn't know that he was listening right outside the door, or if she did, she didn't care. He had been watching her ever since, trying not to let it show, but he knew she could tell. His aunt then had begun talking about the next unfortunate person who had attracted her attention: a businessman who's secretary had left town without telling anyone why.
Leo placed his hand on her left shoulder. She didn't react. He gripped her a little tighter and shook her from whatever it was she had been concentration on.
“Can you give me that aspirin?” She asked pointing to a bottle in the box Angelo held. Leo picked up the mini bottle that looked dwarfed in his large hand. He twisted the cap off and made a pouring motion and about ten pills dropped out. He dumped them back in, everyone heard the pills hollow sounding little thunk in the now silence. She took a swig of water from a sport drink before she tucked it into a plastic bag that she had made into a sling that wrapped round her right shoulder and hung down to her left hip forming a sash across the middle of her chest.
“If I'm not back by the next round of searches, then I'm gone. Don't come looking for me.” Leo didn't say a word, just put his arm around Angelo and pulled him close. She climbed up the wooden stairs and pushed heavily against the wooden floor with her shoulder. A section of the floorboards came up and the slid out. The last thing Leo saw was her hand lowing the wood gently back down, before he and Angelo were plunged into darkness.
