No encores tonight
We used to hold hands
just like a famous church choir would
after a performance,
right before the audience started
whistling, cheering, screaming.
And they just had to give in
for a second encore.

And I used to bow down too,
just like that same church choir
to the idea that you would always
be right there next to me
holding, smiling, loving.
But I guess you never quite gave in
even for a second.

Because one day you were gone
and I don’t think I’ll ever sing again.
