Star Above Venice

From the streets of Venice,

One could spy,

A certain girl on her balcony,

Every night would be seen to cry.

-

Her father had no idea,

That after sending her to bed,

She'd climb up the stairs with a candle,

Making her way to the balcony instead.

-

On the balcony, looking over the Grand Canal,

The water gently flowing,

The gondolas rocking back and forth,

The girl would look hard in the depths of the water for something glowing.

-

She'd soon find it,

A spot so bright,

The reflection dazzling,

In the silent night.

-

In her pale nightdress,

Slightly shivering,

The wind gently ruffling her hair,

Hot tears to her eyes springing.

-

"Star Above Venice" she'd say,

Looking up directly from the water to the sky,

She'd be sure to find the caster of the reflection,

The dot of glitter, in the sky high.

-

Looking intently at the star,

She'd remember what she was once told,

Loved ones, lost ones, would become stars,

Watching over you, always near, shinning as bright as gold.

-

It had been her mother,

To tell her that,

And now she was also a star,

Watching over the girl, like she'd said.

-

Looking up at the star one last time,

"Mum, I knew you'd never leave me",

The girl would say, blowing out her candle,

In the darkness, inside, she'd flee.

-

And up above,

A mother would be pleased,

To see her daughter once again,

To keep what she had promised.

-

But the sight of the girl's tears,

Would be tugging at the mother's heart,

Making her blame herself,

For ever leaving her angel, her sweetheart.
