Three years have passed since my last update. I promised I would finish this… here we go. Enjoy. :)
Teres stood still, holding his left wrist tightly with his right hand, eyes focused on where Sekki had been stood only moments before. Amber lingered, arms half outstretched to Teres's wounded hand, while Damon stood on Teres's other side. The few moments it took for Sekki's transformation had felt like an eternity, that time had somehow frozen and that they had been locked in the event. It was all very deep magic, it baffled the three. The threat of the demons themselves seemed no longer important; all eyes; human and demonic; were focused on the former 'High Mage.'
Smoky tendrils continued to lap at the distorting figure, covering any distinct shape, throwing shadows on the ground. A deep, dark light seemed to emanate from the form; pulsing slightly as though it were a heartbeat. The onlookers drew breath as the light faded, the acrid 'blood' singing the grass it came into contact with, and Sekki's true form was finally revealed. A five foot high humanoid, burnt black skin; bones just visible beneath the thinning and torn flesh; eyes the same as all demons around him. Sekki was no better than one of them.
The three rings had rolled onto the floor; Teres dropping them as his hand was burnt; and they now came to a stop by Seika's demon-form. She had her eyes locked on Sekki like the others, but… a flicker of movement could be detected from her eyes when she saw Sekki for what he really was. Raising one claw, she scooped up the three earrings and stood tall, looking down at them.
Souls…Trapped for eternity…Slaves…
A rush of power could be felt from the jewellery, the demon could sense it. But… what to do…? Now Sekki was in his true form, did he pose no threat? Seika glanced around at the hoard of demons. An army. Blood dripped from their claws and fangs; the remnants of the people Sekki had devoured. She exhaled as the mist continued to thin, though no sunlight penetrated. All three earrings looked the same to the naked eye… but one of them… one of them belonged to Seika. The soul it contained was hers. To entrap it was sinful, no one had the right to have done that. She closed her eyes and let out a growl; other demons shifting uncomfortably, unsure what to do. They still feared Sekki, but they craved the flesh of the living… of which there were three standing very close. A ripple of unease went through the crowd; their attention leaving Sekki and beginning to focus on the trio stood still.
Amber looked up, sensing the shift in attitude; while Sekki still had not moved. "Damon…" she whispered, nodding in the general direction of the demons. "I… they are… Damon, look," she raised her voice slightly, looking to him for support.
Damon glanced over with slightly narrowed eyes, then back at Teres, "what now, bud? What do we do…?"
Still clutching his burning hand, Teres chewed his bottom lip, "I don't know… I thought they might have disappeared or… something?" He looked past Sekki to where Seika was, and he quickly formed a plan. "She can still kill them," he breathed to the others. "Her soul… trapped in the earring. Give it back, we stand a fighting chance."
"And… Sekki…?" Damon directed his attention to the creature.
"Doesn't seem to be doing anything now… let's get to Seika while we have the chance. Move now!"
Still clutching his arm, Teres made the first move. There were several metres between himself and where Sekki stood; then a few more paces beyond that before Seika and the demons that had them all surrounded. He knew he couldn't afford to wait, so Teres sprinted for all he was worth, letting go of burnt hand as he raced past Sekki-
…Before being struck down by the demon. Sekki, seemingly stood perfectly still, had struck faster than anyone could blink; one arm outstretched, claw slicing right through Teres as he charged past.
Teres was dead before he hit the ground; stomach sliced open, Sekki's claw remaining inside as he fell forwards, cutting open his thigh and exposing the bone. The claw had torn through major arteries, and the blood pumped out, relentless.
"No!!" Amber and Damon yelled in unison, dashing forwards to their friend's aid; before halting their approach by a hiss from Sekki. They skidded to a halt, Damon shaking with rage and Amber crying silently. "Still a threat it seems," Damon murmured, eyes darting from Teres, to Sekki and then to Seika's demon form. "Teres… man… he was… like… my brother…" Damon whispered, shaking. Amber put an arm on her brother's back, staring wide-eyed at Teres's lifeless form. "Sekki… how could you…"
The hiss deepened as Sekki moved. Despite it's hideous form, it still moved with a similar grace as before, stealthy, not giving anything away. It eyed the pair, circling them slowly, forcing them towards the fresh corpse. Amber's sobs were the only sounds breaking the eerie silence, Damon put one hand protectively over his sister. "It'll be okay," he said, backing away from both Sekki and Teres. He just felt sick. The stench of the demons, the shock of everything… it was all too much. His eyes clouded and his hearing was muffled. He wasn't ready for this. This was too wrong.
Pausing, Damon narrowed his eyes… did someone say something? It couldn't have been Amber…
I'm coming… to… save you.
"Seika…?" Damon thought, realising who it was. It couldn't be, though… could it? She was there, alive, in there… somehow…!?
Going against his instincts, Damon whirled around, eyes leaving the threat of Sekki and falling on Seika… and… it truly was her! Restored to her human form, standing, weak, but alive. She gripped two of the earrings in her fist, the third, her soul, worn as a ring on her middle finger. "How…" Damon breathed, dumbstruck; completely unaware of Sekki any longer; gaze focused only on the girl… and her wings. So beautiful they were… Her eyes remained the same; dark crimson… hair unkempt and greasy… but she was back.
A wash of emotions overcame Damon, he leant against Amber, using her to help support his weight. "Damon… stand up, please," she pleaded, trying to yank him back up to his feet – but it was no use. He had already sunk to his knees, one hand on the floor, the other being held up by his sister. "Damon… stand up… Sekki is… Damon!" Amber yelled, trying to drag him away from Sekki's approach. Amber glanced over to where Damon had looked, and her mouth fell open when she saw Seika stood there, or rather hunched, such a poor state she was in. Amber was shaking with fear, nausea, grief at the loss of Teres… her tears fell continuously and her body continued to shiver.
Sekki made his way past Damon and Amber; ignoring Teres's body and making a line straight for Seika. She seemed unconscious, her eyes out of focus and she swayed uneasily on her feet. Amber looked to her, willing her to find the strength to fight the nightmare of the demons. Sekki was only a few feet from the girl, no doubt with intent to gain his powers back and end her life forever. It quickened it's approach, not wanting to lose momentum, or for Seika to fully awaken. Raising it's claws, Sekki drove itself into her, ready to slash at her unguarded skin and dispose of her as quickly as he had Teres.
The attack never met it's mark. Drawing her wings around herself, Seika used them as a barrier… the feathers taking on strength not seen before; strength enough to repel Seikki's attack and send the demon flying back. Amber clung onto Damon's semi-conscious form as Sekki was thrown back; many of the other demons scattering to get away. Fear and confusion filled the air, and Seika stood up, almost rising above it all, clearing her head and focussing on the job at hand. She opened her wings, still clutching the rings in her hands, and she stared out towards Sekki; taking slow, soft steps towards where he'd landed several metres away. This was it. This was the final battle…
Short sweet filler to bring y'all back with a bang. :)
