bright eyes

your eyes are bright (but your mind is so dark)
brimming with hope, with fear
a single drop will burst the dam
and bring forth a life of disappointment
of mistrust
of lies (and promises whispered in the unlit grass,
as hands brush and hearts race, as eyes shut
and tears flow)
underlined by blacks and blues, they are, and tainted, red.
you pierce all who come before your worthy gaze (to find them wanting,
to send them packing, if you only could.)
dark lines and darker thoughts (the marks on your wrist aren't all from bracelets pulled tight)
you take a deep breath (but you're drowning instead)
step (after step) on a weary path (all alone)
you're an outcast (so quiet)
but you scream inside.
