When I had returned to London, I had never thought that the past would be waiting for me. My brothers, Alain and Bryce, were instantly worried for my safety, although, I couldn’t see why. Upon arriving in the god-forsaken city, I had immediately gone to visit my father’s grave, only to find it had been desecrated by those who had killed him 10 years ago.
If you’re just coming into my story now, let me share with you a little about my brothers and myself. My name is Raine Chappell, and I live with my two brothers Alain and Bryce. Alain and I are twins, and Bryce is the oldest, older by at least 5 years. Our parents, when we were much younger, were hunters of the night, and slayers of those who haunted it. My parents were vampire hunters. My mother, the most wonderful person I had ever known, had died when Alain and I were four-years-old. The cause? Complications with the baby she had been carrying. Needless to say, neither of them lived. My father was rumored to be the best and most powerful vampire hunter in all of Europe – but he was killed when I was merely ten. The man who killed him, one of the elders, Aleron, swore that he would return for my brothers and I one day.
So we left London, and traveled with our advisor for eight years, until Alain and I had become 18. Bryce was already 23 by now, and had been caring for us for the longest time. When we began our journey home, I was 19, and when we finally reached London, I had just turned twenty.
So now you come into our story, wondering what’s in store. I suppose all I can really say is, try to enjoy.
“Raine, get down!” Alain shouted at me, as one of the beasts came far too close to my head. I was beginning to get agitated; they had some sort of freaky obsession with my head!
“Both of you, get down and shut up!” Bryce yelled at us, shooting a couple of the airborne ones down, and backing up to get near enough to us. If you hadn’t noticed, Bryce was trying to play big brother again, something that really got on Alain’s nerves.
Before either of them knew what had happened, I plucked a stake from my brother’s belt and threw it – staking an on-coming vampire in the heart. Alain stared at me for a moment, before he got snapped back to reality by the sound of…silence?
I looked up, frowning, and examining the area. The vampires had gone, as dawn was approaching quickly. I took a quick count of how many we had gotten tonight – four. None of us said anything as we walked back towards our Inn. Yes, our Inn. Our parents left it to us, seeing as we’re the only Chappell’s left. The Inn was also a pub, where the out-of-towners could come to have an ale, some bread, maybe some meat and cheese, and then stay the night.
When we were out honing our skills as hunters, we left the Inn to our “advisor” who had, more or less, become more like a sister to us than anything else.
“Oi, what happened to ya’ll? Ya look like you had a run in with one o’ them…automobiles, Bryce! And Raine! What’s that on your jacket?” Anita frowned, coming out from behind the bar and looking us over. Of course, Alain hadn’t gotten a drop of blood on him from the fight. You see, he was the graceful one.
“I’m fine, Anita, quit fussing. You’re acting like an over-protective mother again.” I frowned and took a seat at the bar, pulling off my fingerless gloves. Alain sat next to me, and instictively reached over and began cleaning my jacket with a rag. I swatted his hand away in irritation, and took a sip of the ale that was passed to me. Alain chuckled lightly, and reached for his own.
“You know, Raine, if you don’t get the blood out of that soon, it’s going to ruin your jacket.” Alain cast me a glance, knowing I really couldn’t care less about my jacket.
“Just leave it, Alain. You know how she gets.” Bryce countered, taking a seat next to Anita behind the bar.
“Oh, and how do I get, Bryce?” I snapped defensively. I hated it when they ganged up on me like this. Always when we got back from a kill, too. “Just because you killed two tonight, doesn’t give you the right to think-“
“Doesn’t give me the right to think what? I’m just concerned for your safety, Raine! You’re my little sister, and Alain is my little brother. It’s my responsibility to make sure your stay-“
“Just drop it, you two.” Alain muttered, frowning into his ale. I cast him a glance, and noticed a small cut on the side of his face.
“Alain, when did-?” I reached over and brushed the cut with my finger, and he pulled away.
“It happened during the fight, just don’t worry about it.” He frowned, then stood and walked off up the stairs to his room. Bryce stared after him, a thoughtful frown on his face.
“…Did something happen that I should be knowin’ abou’?” Anita asked, looking between us and frowning. I shrugged, then grabbed my ale and strode off to sit by the fire and think. I could tell Bryce was still staring towards the stairs, but seconds later he shook his head and walked off to the back.
