NOTE: If you read slowly enough, you can almost (almost) hear 'Stairway to Heaven'.

WOODEN HEART

And now it’s my turn,
I write so you’ll learn
what it means to put words onto paper…
Five hours, and still,
there are pages to fill,
yet I show you them – unfinished.

While reading this place,
I hope that your face
will uncover its reticent meaning.
But the longer it’s read,
the deeper my dread;
I demand to know of your feelings!

Your words – they are good,
but they’re stiffened by wood.
Do you mean what you say in this message?

In anger, I try
to explain my reply –

Silent, you stare at the pages.

If you mean what you say
then why must you lay
aside the meaning of mine?
You sound too remote
in these words that you wrote…

You flick me away with a sigh.

I see you in black
as I take them all back
and wish that I’d simply forgotten.
There are words in my head
(that you could have said!)
But don’t bother, my Love, they’ve gone
rotten.
