Make Me

AKA: First Time For Everything

Author's Note - I'm sorry this took so long. I wouldn't be surprised if all my original readers left. But, I finished! I know this is kind of crappy, but when I have time, I'm going to go back and rework all the chapters, making everything better, I promise. Thanks to:
Kaede Kitsurani, crazylady4, mrs.scarlet101.5, Hello Kitty On Acid, authordream4life, Out-Spoken-Runaway
for reviewing the last chapter. ENJOY.

I considered telling Nathaniel about Mandy's behavior, but he didn't like Mandy to begin with, and he still didn't fully understand the friendship that we had. I avoided any mention of her, including the break up. However, I couldn't stop worrying about her. The behavior she had exhibited earlier was just too weird for me.

We sat together on the couch, Nathaniel's arms wrapped around me. I leaned back against his chest, loving the way he smelled, especially now that he'd stopped smoking around me. I tried to pay attention to the movie, but I couldn’t enjoy it while my thoughts were plagued with thoughts of Mandy, and why she’d been acting that way.

When the movie was over, I left Nathaniel’s house, rather than stay, telling him that I needed some time to myself. That was partly true. I got home and went up to my room. I debated over whether to call Mandy and see if she was okay, when the phone rang. Weird. It was Mandy. Even weirder.

“Andie, can you come pick me up? Or come over? I…I did something bad and I need to talk to you,” she said. She sounded serious, and my worries increased.

“I’ll be right over,” I promised her. We hung up and I grabbed my jacket, leaving once again for Mandy’s. I did something bad. What could she have possibly done? Did she key Jason’s car? Honestly, I couldn’t think of what she could possibly mean by that statement.

I let myself into the house and ran up the stairs. Mandy was in her bedroom, still in her pajamas. I sat down on the bed beside her, taking my jacket off.

“What’s wrong? Is this about Jason?” I asked. She shook her head, but didn’t say anything right away. She was clutching the sleeves of her shirt in her fists.

“Why are you friends with me?” she asked finally. She didn’t look up at me and I was confused. Why was she acting like this?

“Why am I friends with you? Mandy what’s the matter?”

“You didn’t answer my question,” she replied, sniffling a bit. Had she been crying this whole time?

“I’m friends with you because you’re fun to be around. I like that you’re the opposite of me. I can trust you, and you’re a great friend. Now will you tell me what’s wrong?” I asked her. She sniffled again, but instead of talking, she pushed the sleeves of her sweatshirt up.

“Oh,” was all I could say when I saw what she’d done. Angry red cuts decorated her arms. Jesus, this is not the Mandy I know. I wrapped my arms around her in a hug.

“Is this because of Jason?” I asked again.

“It’s not just Jason…it’s everything. There has to be something wrong with me if I can’t even keep a boyfriend for a month,” she explained, “and the thing is…I really, really like Jason. I actually thought he was going to be a long-term thing. But…I guess he didn’t like me as much as I thought…” She sighed.

“I know you probably already know this, but if he can’t see what a great girl you are, he really doesn’t deserve you. Promise me you won’t cut again,” I asked. She bit her lip but didn’t say anything right away.

“Mandy? Please? I know I’m a bitch to you sometimes but you’re my best friend and I don’t want to see you hurt,” I added. She took a deep breath.

“I promise,” she replied, smiling a little. I smiled back and hugged her again.

“Now, let’s do something fun,” I suggested. She grinned.

Epilogue

So, in the end everything turned out to be okay. Nathaniel and I stayed together, Mandy changed back to her usually cheery self, and she even found a new boyfriend – this one was definitely right for her.

I’d never thought I would have gotten a boyfriend, or that Mandy would be depressed over something…or any of those things, but you know what they say: “There’s a first time for everything”.
