HEY!!! Another (possibly final) chapter. Woohoo!
Want To Dance?
Kara and Dave returned as Magic Numbers was finishing up (thankfully). Both looked at little flushed and Dave's hair was sticking up a little in the back.
Emily grinned as she took her diet coke. "Long lines?"
Kara grinned and nodded.
"Like you wouldn't believe. So how's Magic Numbers?" Dave said settling down in the seat next to Kara. Obviously emboldened by their recent make out session he put and arm around her and stared at Jesse as if
daring him to say something.
Jesse however had been in an increasingly good mood since Kara and Dave had left for drinks. He was now almost euphoric with virtually no explaination.
"They suck." He replied happily.
Emily grinned, "And they're indignant about it. They get angrier with each song for the crowd not being into it. It's pretty hilarious."
Magic Number's finished up their final song. The small crowd clapped timidly.
"Alright. We're out of here." The singer said staring at the crowd.
They got the loudest applause of the night.
"Well, see you later." He said with furrowed eyebrows.
They could almost see his head thinking, We're huge in England, what is this?!
"Aww, poor guy." Emily said. Then an idea struck her. "I LOVE YOU!" She yelled.
Jesse lowered in his seat in embarassment, "Emily, what are you doing?"
The lead singer however, looked up as if hardly believing it.
"I want to have your babies you sexy beast!" She continued.
He perked up and smiled. "Thank you." He said into the mic.
"Oh my god." Jesse said covering his eyes.
She touched his am, "Calm dowm you big baby. I'm going up."
"NO! Please for the love of god, do not embarrass yourself anymore than you already have." He begged.
"Aww, he loves it. Kara want to come?"
"No thanks." Kara said with a grin.
Emily flounced up to the stage and the singer bent down to talk to her.
"You guys are amazing." She said to him.
The singer shrugged, "Thanks. You know the crowd isn't really into it. This is the worst show we've ever played."
"Aww, you're just playing the wrong crowd. These are Bright Eyes fans, not the most energetic bunch. I just wanted to let you know me and my friends really loved the show."
"Thanks, love." He said turning to Jesse, Kara and Dave. Jesse was blushing like crazy and kept gesturing for her to sit back down. "That your boyfriend?"
"Oh!" Emily blushed.
"You guys look cute together."
She looked down at Jesse and smiled. "I guess we do. Thanks."
"Looks like he wants you back down there."
She looked down and laughed at his face. "Yeah, I guess you're right. But before I go let me get your autograph?"
"Of course." He grinned. He took out a CD from his bag, "What's your name?"
"Emily." She giggled. "Hey, make it out to Jesse too. He's too embarassed to come up but he'll appreciate it."
"Sure thing." He said scrawling something on the CD. "There you go, love." He handed her a CD and kissed her on the cheek. "Come out to our next show, okay?"
"Of course!" She exclaimed. "Thanks."
She walked back to her seat to see a very surprised looking Jesse.
"You amaze me." He said for the second time that night.
She grinned. "Look what I got us." She held the CD out to him.
He took it and read, "To Emily and Jesse, thanks for
coming out to the show. Jesse you're one lucky guy. Love The Magic Numbers."
"Why did he say I was a lucky guy?"
"Uh, he thought we were going out." She blushed.
He gave her a strange look as she settled back in her seat.
"What?" She asked. "I didn't tell him we were going out." She said indignantly. "He just assumed. He said we were a cute couple."
"And you didn't correct him?"
"I tried, but you know, whatever. At least we know if we did go out we're a cute couple." She laughed awkwardly. "So uh, are you excited for Fiest?"
"Yeah." He said, relieved they were talking about music again. "Leslie is going to be amazing."
They sat through Fiest, who as Emily predicted were amazing. Despite her frequent Canadian references (calling "z" zed and such).
They were about to start their final song when Leslie leaned into the mic. "Hey, this last one's called Mushaboom."
Emily grinned and squeezed Jesse's hand.
"I'm getting a few friends to help me out for this one." She turned to the side, "Conor, Jenny?"
"Oh my god! Is that Jenny Lewis?" Emily asked.
"That is Jenny fucking Lewis!" Jesse exclaimed.
"And look Conor OBerst! He's even cuter in person!" Emily squealed. "Look at his teeny ass!" She exclaimed as he bent over to grab a tamborine.
When the song finished Fiest, needless to say got a much bigger applause than Magic Numbers.
When Emily had yelled herself hoarse she settled back in her seat. "So, what songs to you think Bright Eyes'll play?"
Jesse shrugged, "None of their best songs. You know all their new album shit. Old Soul Song, ROad To Joy, First Day of My Life, Hit the Switch, maybe they'll throw in When The President Talks To God, beause we're
in DC. That stuff. Unfortunately probably nothing off Lifted or Fevers and Mirrors."
"Well that kind of sucks."
Jesse shrugged, "It's all good stuff. Just not the best."
The lights went dark and everyone started clapping. The spotlight went on a girl playing a harp. You couldn't see anything else on the stage. All of the sudden the melody changed to the farmiliar choppy
"No!" Emily exclaimed.
"Does he kiss your eyelids in the morning, when you start to raise your head?" Conor sang into the mic as the spotlight switched to him.
"Yessss!" Jesse and Emily exclaimed in unison. They screamed the song along with Conor, louder and stronger than anyone else in the crowd.
As he finished he leaned into the mic, "Hey." He breathed. "DC. How's it going?"
The crowd exploded.
"How'd you like Magic Numbers?"
The crowded cheered in response.
"God, Fiest. Oh my god, Fiest. I can't even believe she's alive."
Emily nudged Jesse.
"So, this next song, it's a love song. Means a lot to me. I hope you like it." He closed his eyes and began to strum his guitar lightly.
"Well you say, that I treat you like a bowl upon the shelf..."
"Want to dance?" Jesse asked.
"Dance? Nobody's dancing!" Emily replied.
"Oh, so you get to be fun and spontaneous and I don't? Get up, we're going to dance in the aisles and nobody's going to stop us."
She smiled and grabbed his hand. They walked out into the aisle and smiled and each other as she put her arms around his neck and he put his hands on her waist.
"Your too tall." She whined. "I'd rather dance with Conor, only 5'2", I could reach his neck just fine."
"Oh shut up Emily."
She grinned but stopped talking. She breathed in his clogne (Abrocrombie and Fitch, she almost teased him about it) as they shuffled around, during the intrumental Conor spoke into the mic, "Look
at those two. That is what this song is about!"
Emily opened her mouth in shock, "He's talking about us!"
Jesse shrugged, "Well, I'm not going to lie, we are a cute couple." He said teasingly.
"We were just kids when I first kissed you in the attic of my parents house..."
Jesse's face got serious, "Emily, if I kiss you will you freak out and not talk to me for a week?"
"No," Emily breathed.
Jesse smiled, "Well, good because midterms are coming up and I don't want Jen to have to be my tutor again and-"
"Are you going to kiss me or not?" Emily said impatiently. "You can't lead a girl on like that and then ramble for twenty minutes about-"
He bent down to her face and their lips brushed for the first time Emily wondered why it had taken them so long to get here. Jesse was perfect, the perfect man for her.
The End????? Or only the beginning???
Psst…Happy Birthday Jenny!
