“Hmm… An interesting roster for incoming students.” A man said, chuckling softly. “They have no idea what awaits them at this school.” Laughing outright, he leaned back and relaxed in his chair, mulling over the things he’d be able to do. “Interesting indeed…”

Prologue

Welcome to Hero High

It was the first day of school for Nina Miriar. Ordinarily, this meant she would be bored out of her mind going through various procedures about keeping her abilities secret, not getting into fights with normal humans, and all that sort of thing. This, however, was nowhere remotely close to being a normal school.

This was Hero High, the world’s highest-rated school for super-powered beings, and a place where a day that she couldn’t use her powers would be a very strange day indeed. Nina had already spotted over a dozen adult heroes guarding the school, and had even watched a fight between one and his arch-nemesis. That didn’t particularly surprise her; the introduction day at a place like this was a target for every villain who wanted to kidnap somebody with a power or five.

Right now, however, the girl was in line. Usually, this too would have been boring. However, she was nearing the front now, and the whole purpose of it was to make sure that people had the powers they were supposed to. Naturally, this could be fascinating to watch.

“Prove your power!” the instructor said to a girl up front, pointing towards a target. The girl laughed and threw a fireball at the target, blasting it apart. “Pass!” the girl nodded and took a packet as she walked inside. Meanwhile, workers replaced the destroyed target with a new one. “Name?” he asked the next person in line.

The boy up front muttered for about five minutes.

“Oh, that’s how it’s pronounced? I’d been wondering.” The instructor said, checking her sheet. “Sheesh, a name like that is just nuts… No offense. Prove your power.” Steel tendrils erupted out of nowhere and slammed into the target, shattering it in an instant. The boy hadn’t even turned to look at it. “Pass!” she handed him a packet as well, and looked up at Nina. “Name?”

“Nina Miriar.” The girl said, smiling slightly.

“Prove your power.” The instructor replied, not sounding too bored. This was certainly an interesting way to start the day, after all, even if one was used to super-powered beings. Nina smiled and looked over at the target. It shot up into the air, spun around several times, then smashed into the ground and shattered. A new target was quickly brought out. “Here’s a tip; narrow your range.” The instructor said, handing her a packet. “Pass.” The girl behind Nina moved forward. That girl was, Nina noticed, the only one who had not spoken in excitement while in the line. Probably nervous, if Nina’s guess was correct.

As Nina was walking towards the main building, however, screams erupted from the people behind her. Whirling around, the girl saw only the same quiet girl standing in front of the instructor, looking very embarrassed about something. Everybody behind her was staring with a mixture of awe and fright, with most of them having backed a good ways away.

“P-pass…” the instructor whispered, handing the girl a packet. The girl quickly moved forward, trying to hurry away, and ran straight into Nina before either realized what was happening, sending both of them tumbling to the ground.

Scrambling upright, the girl blushed furiously and scribbled an apology on a piece of paper.

“It’s okay.” Nina replied, fighting back a laugh. “I wasn’t really paying attention, either, or I would have gotten out of the way.” The girl nodded, still embarrassed, and quickly gathered Nina’s things for her. “I’m Nina.”

Ellyrianna… the girl wrote. But you can call me Ria if you’d prefer that… Nina chuckled and stood upright.

“Well, then, Ria. Let’s go.” She said, turning around once she’d taken her things. Ria nodded and followed the girl into the building, looking around nervously. According to their instructions, they were to go and meet up with the other first year girls and would then be assigned their dorm rooms. Their class schedules were waiting for them there. Shrugging, Nina lead the way around the area, noticing the instructors looking towards them uneasily. She knew it wasn’t her that was scaring them, so it could only have been… “Ria, what’s your power?” Nina finally asked. The girl winced and closed her mouth tightly. “Um… If you don’t want to tell me, you don’t need to, but…”

Sorry… she wrote. It’s just that a lot of people get really scared when I even talk about it, so… she trailed off. Nina shrugged, checked the room number, and headed inside. Ria followed, looking distinctly nervous. The woman by the door nodded as they came in.

“Names?” She asked.

“I’m Nina, and this is Ellyrianna.” Nina said, correctly guessing that Ria didn’t like talking more then she had to. The woman nodded and checked their names off on a list.

“You two are lucky; you’re roomed together. The other three haven’t come in, yet. Head to room 527 in Helio Dormitory.” The woman said, nodding briskly. The two girls moved off, making way for a boy who was looking around the place as if actually bored.

“Out of my way!” a girl’s voice snapped. Several people were suddenly shoved aside by an unseen force as a prissy sort of girl strode down the path she was making. “Teacher, where’s my room?” she asked.

“Hey, we were here first!” a blue-haired girl replied defensively. The boy rolled his eyes, looking mildly irritated.

“Name first.” The teacher responded sharply to her. The girl sighed.

“I am Priscilla Litharin, daughter of the great and noble—“

“Oh, shut it.” The blue haired girl interrupted, shoving her aside. “I’m Aquila.”

“…I’m the one with the long name.” the boy finally said. The woman lifted up her paper, looking at the next fourteen pages or so, which showed a single extremely long name.

“Indeed.” She said, blinking. “How very amusing. You three are with those two over there, room 527, Helio Dormitory.” Nina choked, not believing what she was hearing. So, five minutes later, when all of them were standing in front of a massive golden building, she had trouble trying to figure out what to do next. Thankfully, however, she didn’t need to.

“We’re staying in room 527.” Priscilla said, looking at the homely woman behind the counter. The woman yawned and handed her five pairs of keys. After handing them to the others, Priscilla calmly levitated herself up the stairwell, moving ahead.

“I’m Nina, and this is Ria. She doesn’t talk much.” Nina said, looking at her roommates. Ria smiled gratefully as the girl Aquila nodded at her. The boy didn’t seem to notice. “I’m not sure what she does, but it’s something scary, and I’m a telekinetic.”

“Pyrokinetic.” Aquila said, nodding. “People usually get scared of me, too, because it’s so weird.” Nina blinked, not understanding what the girl meant, and looked over to the boy.

“…Call me Kai.” He said. “It’s shortened, and nobody should have to say my full name if they don’t have to.” He didn’t offer an explanation of whatever his power was, nor did Nina ask. Something about him seemed dangerous. Or, the girl amended mentally, more dangerous then usual.

“Mmm… Anybody want me to levitate them up?” Nina asked, looking around. Nobody objected, so shortly afterwards the four of them entered their room. Priscilla was standing in front of the bed closest to the windows and the kitchen, telekinetically arranging her personal living space.

Nina raised an eyebrow, but didn’t comment and looked around the room. There was a small kitchen off to the side, and what looked like a bathroom and a shower room, in separate areas. The five beds were lined up against one wall, and the room was undecorated except for the items Priscilla had already set up. Ignoring everybody else, Kai moved over to the bed furthest from Priscilla’s and looked around it for a moment. Steel tendrils shot through the ground and ceiling, forming a solid barrier that would keep everybody away from his area. The way they interlocked reminded Nina of the sharp teeth some predators had, a sort of zig-zag configuration. After a few seconds, the boxes with the boy’s things vanished, presumably teleported somehow.

“Well, that’s interesting.” Nina said, moving over to the steel tendrils. After a close examination, she found that there were no gaps of any sort in it. Shrugging, the girl plopped onto the middle bed and looked around, assessing the view. Aquila took the one between her and Kai, leaving Ria to be stranded next to Priscilla. Smiling, Nina levitated the boxes containing their things to each one’s owner, and began lazily setting her own items up.

“You know… Ria, was it? You can have my bed if you like it better.” Aquila said, standing upright. “I just remembered; my bed’s in a side room.”

“Why?” Nina asked, getting up to follow the girl. She found herself staring at a pool of water. “You’re kidding… We have a pool and you get to sleep in it?”

“Yup!” Aquila replied, diving in. As she did, her legs shapeshifted into what looked like the rear part of a fish. It took several seconds for this to register with Nina, and about ten more to put two and two together.

“YOU’RE A FIRE CONTROLLING MERMAID!?”

“Bingo!” Aquila said from underwater, sounding far more comfortable then she had any right to be. After a moment, she conjured a flame that somehow existed underwater. “Told you people thought it was weird.” Nina stared at her for a moment, then gulped nervously, nodded, and headed back into the main room. Ria was busy moving her things away from Priscilla, who had commandeered what looked to be the best recliner to relax on.

Nina raised an eyebrow and headed for the doorway.

“I’m heading out to explore the school building.” She said.

“Get me something to eat while you’re at it.” Priscilla said, turning on the TV with a mental push of the POWER button.

“Get your own food.” Nina replied, stepping outside. Ria hurried after her, not wanting to be relatively alone, and clung close to her as the two began heading down the staircases. “She’s so stuck up… Sometime, I’m just going to use my telekinesis and do something to her that she’ll never forget…” Ria smiled slightly.

You should get Aquila and Kai to help you, if you can. She wrote. Nina shrugged but didn’t outright object to this idea as they continued on. As they stepped into the lobby, however, the woman in charge looked over.

“Oy, you two!” she called. Both of the girls looked over. “Come help me with this!” she gestured at a large box, which had been stuck in the entryway. Nina chuckled and moved it easily inside with her mind, glad that she had telekinesis. “Thanks…” she said, rapping it. “You were with Priscilla, right? When you go up there, be sure to tell her that if she wants her stuff, she has to come down and get it.” Nina looked at the box, which was unusually heavy, and sighed.

“She’ll probably try and get us to do it.” The girl muttered, leading Ria outside. To her surprise, the place was practically a fairground as adult heroes gave lessons to groups of students (or, for a lucky few kids, one-on-one lessons), preliminary tryouts for things like gymnastics were being held, and so forth. “We should check out some of this stuff.” Nina suggested. After Ria nodded in an interested way, the two of them ambled over to a hero who looked like he was just starting a lesson.

“Now, one of the first things you’ll want to do when fighting an opponent who is restricted to a particular element is find out what their weaknesses are. For example, if your villain uses electricity, you can avoid damage from his attacks by keeping your feet tightly locked together. However, if you are big on water, then you’d want to find somebody else to fight him, because he would likely be able to flatten you.” The hero was explaining. “It’s no shame to retreat and ask somebody else to take care of an opponent if you would have a particularly low chance of beating him. Not only is it done all the time, but it ensures trust and cooperation between people.” He looked around the crowd, and his gaze settled on a boy up front. “You. What’s your power?” the hero asked. In the traditional way of showing rather then explaining, the boy looked upward and let out an explosive blast of sound from his mouth, causing the air itself to ripple alarmingly. “I see… However, that form of attack has many limitations. From what I saw, you can only fire forward, cannot do a continuous blast, or make it stop. That’s what I would think if we were to fight, until you did something to prove me otherwise.” The boy shifted around uneasily. “Which is something else important to remember. Hide as many of your abilities as you can when in battle, so you can fool your opponent into thinking you can’t do things you can. What is my power?” he suddenly asked.

“You can throw fireballs!” somebody yelled. The hero smirked. After a split second, a column of fire shot up from the ground around him, causing more then a few people to leap backwards in shock. The flames died down a moment later.

“If you were under the impression that all I could do was throw fireballs, then doing something like that while we were engaged in combat would likely shock you long enough for me to deliver a series of blows. I’m a full pyrokinetic; I can control fire completely. The only flames I can’t are ones of other pyrokinetics, but I’m powerful enough to beat most of them by sheer skill and force. Ingenuity about using your abilities will often give you a major advantage in combat.” The hero continued on, with most students paying rapt attention. Bored of him, Nina and Ria moved off, seeking something a little more exciting. It didn’t take long; the two found Kai and some other boy inside a ring of onlookers. Obviously, they were going to fight.

“Come on, let’s do this!” the other boy yelled. Both he and Kai had massive steel tendrils wrapped around their arms, several on each side. Yelling, the boy shot his forward, aiming directly for Kai. Raising an eyebrow, the boy lifted his left arm. Two of his own tendrils shot out. However, instead of meeting his opponent’s blasts head on, Kai’s weapons corkscrewed around his opponent’s, shifting them aside as they continued on to strike the boy in the chest and slam him into the ground. “Urgh… No way! I’m not done yet!” he yelled, scrambling up as Kai turned his back and began walking away. “Don’t you dare turn your back on me!” he pushed both of his arms forward, shooting ten massive tendrils towards Kai. The quiet boy half-turned and pointed his left index and middle fingers at his opponent. Light shot out, disintegrating the defeated boy’s tendrils before moving on to strike him in the chest and blast him backwards.

“Idiot.” Kai said, continuing to walk away. “If you’re going to try and impress girls, don’t pick a fight with a god.” He walked off, either not noticing or not caring about the stares directed his way.

“…Whoa.” Nina said, blinking. Ria stared after Kai for a few moments before shaking her head vigorously and looking around again. The boy that Kai had so casually defeated was lying on his back, groaning. His shirt had been torn to shreds by Kai’s blast, and his chest was a mass of bruises.

“Nurse. Now.” A teacher said, looking at his chest as she passed by. The boy vanished, teleported away by somebody. Shrugging, Nina lead Ria away from that scene. Similar interesting events were happening all over the place. However, the two really did need to get their bearings inside the school, so they both headed inside.

It was much less crowded. Smiling in satisfaction, the two tracked down their first period class. Inside the room was a phenomenally beautiful woman who was quietly filing her nails.

“Oh, hello.” She said, looking up. “You’re not boys, good. They’ve been after me all day.” She shuddered slightly. “When your power is being very attractive, it causes problems with horny teenage superpowered students. Would you two be in this class, by any chance?” the two girls nodded. “Ah, excellent! I am Ms. Karal, your homeroom teacher. I think you’ll like this class; it mainly involves studying different types of powers, along with frequent field trips and practical demonstrations.” She clapped her hands together and stood up. “If you’ve got some free time, come with me. I always like to see what a few students think of one of our school’s mysteries.” Shrugging, Nina and Ria followed Ms. Karal to a sealed room. The door opened of its own accord, revealing a huge, pulsating violet crystal.

“What’s this?” Nina asked curiously.

“I’m not really sure.” Ms. Karal replied. “That’s why it’s such a mystery.” There were shrugs all around and the three slipped out of the room. Waving good-bye to their teacher, Nina and Ria hurried to their second-period class.

“Lord Arakin, fun is not something that has any place in a history class.” A man was protesting.

“Nevertheless, that is all I will say on the subject.” A cold voice said. The girls peeked into the room, and saw the flash of a cloak vanishing.

“Who are you!? What do you want!?” the man snapped.

“Um… This is our second period class…” Nina said nervously.

“I’m Mr. Funk! Now go back outside or something, I’m busy!” the teacher snapped. Sighing, the two girls left.

What a meanie… Ria wrote, looking mildly annoyed. We didn’t do anything and he still got all mad at us.

“Yeah…” Nina muttered. “Humph. I hope our next period--” a bell rang very loudly.

“ALL STUDENTS, RETURN TO YOUR DORMITORIES IMMEDIATELY.”

“Oh, pooh.” Nina said, leading Ria out of the building. They had gone nearly two thirds of the way to the dorms when a cage of evil power shimmered into existence around them. “What the—“

“Hah! Two juicy morsels!” a demon said, walking over to them. He backhanded a Hero who was running towards him, not seeming to think he was a threat at all. As more and more Heroes piled onto him, however, he sighed and blasted them into the distance with a surge of power. “Hah! So you puny beings have never heard the name of Balar, one of the greatest demons from the underworld!” Ria grabbed Nina’s shoulders and turned the girl around, slipping her a note.

Don’t look. Please!

Nina blinked. The demon screamed in a girly manner a moment later, and Nina was passed another note.

Okay, you can look now.

The girl did so, and found that the cage had disappeared and the demon was groveling at a blushing Ria’s feet.

“I’m sorry!” the demon said pitifully. “I’m really, really sorry! Please forgive me!” Ria quickly nodded, and the demon shrunk from his monstrous form into that of a small, adorable black cat. After a moment, the girl handed him a piece of paper, and he read it. “Y-yes, of course!” the demon said. “I’d be happy to!” Ria smiled, picked up the cat and, to the shock of the Heroes, walked into her dorm building with Nina while carrying it.

“What did you do?” Nina asked.

“You don’t know? She—“ the demon began. Ria covered its mouth, blushing furiously. “…Oh, I see.” The demon’s muffled voice said. “I won’t breathe a word, then.” Ria smiled and pulled her hand away before hugging the demon. “…Mmpf.” The demon muttered. Nina shrugged, deciding that it was probably better not to ask, and levitated both of them up the stairwell and to the door of their room.

“Now, don’t cause any trouble.” Nina told the demon warningly. It nodded, and the two headed into their room. Priscilla was levitating grapes into her mouth. Aquila and Kai were nowhere to be seen. “Hey, Pris, did you get your things yet?”

“What did you call me?” Priscilla asked dangerously.

“Pris.” Nina replied. “Because your whole name is a mouthful. Now, did you or didn’t you get your things?”

“Not yet. Go get them for me.”

“Told ya she’d try and get us to do it.” Nina whispered to Ria, who nodded. The girl added, in a louder voice, “Well, sorry, your highness, but you’re going to have to go get that huge box yourself. It’s not my business.” Smiling sweetly at the outraged look on Priscilla’s face, Nina moved over to her bed, looked around it, and pressed a switch on the control board next to it. A TV came down from the ceiling a moment later, at the foot of her bed. “Ooh, this is nice.” Nina said, relaxing as she turned it on. Ria quietly sat beside her a moment later. “Where’s Balar?”

“Here.” The cat/demon replied, hopping onto the top of Nina’s TV. “Man, that Aquila has really nice—“ he paused as all three girls glared at him. “Er, a really nice room.” He amended lamely. The door to Aquila’s room burst open, and the mergirl stormed into the main room.

“YOU!” she yelled, pointing at Balar. “GET BACK HERE, YOU DIRTY LITTLE CAT!” Balar yelped and shot out of the room with Aquila hot on his tail, quite literally. The girl had conjured fire around her fists. Nina and Ria both shrugged, and Nina quietly began channel surfing.

“There ought to be something good to watch.” She said. Ria nodded, and suddenly stiffened as the news came on. Nina stopped changing channels to watch it.

In other news tonight, Hero High School starts classes tomorrow. So far today, nine super villains have attempted to kidnap a number of students, to be stopped by well-known figures such as Muscular Man, Lady Llama, and the Kooky Kid.”

Nina snorted with laughter. “I hope I never have a name like that!”

“Keep it down!” Priscilla yelled.

Hero demon Kusar was also seen patrolling the school, and as his explanation told reporters that he had been asked to do so by an old friend of his. Whether or not this has any meaning remains to be seen.” Ria suddenly blushed, something Nina noticed.

“Do you know him?” she asked. Ria shook her head rapidly. “Well, okay…”

Among the first year students at Hero High this year are the demigods Kai and Ciara, names shortened because they’re so long…—“ Nina and Ria both choked. “And Lady Priscilla Litharin, daughter of the world-famous telekinetic and strong-guy, Crusher Man. Other faces of interest include the fifty-ninth male reincarnation of the Time Lord, an alien princess with the power to destroy objects and make her voice very loud—“ there was an explosion from the top floor.

“YOU COULD HAVE MENTIONED MY NAME!” a girl screamed far too loudly to be normal. Nina and Ria exchanged nervous glances.

“—And, according to one of the reporters, a mergirl who can control fire. No, we don’t get it either, but evidently it’s happened.” Nina sighed and changed the channel again, losing interest.

Hey, kids! It’s Happy Fun Time with me, Colin the Crazy Constipated Clown!” the TV said happily. Nina changed the channel. “Fifty years ago, the powers of Light faced the malicious—“ Nina changed the channel again, having memorized every episode of the show on that channel so well she could play it in her mind. “I love you—“ Nina changed the channel a dozen more times very rapidly, wanting to get away from that show. “Today on Superheroes, we’re having an interview with Crusher Man.”

“Lemme see that!” Priscilla said, running over to watch.

So, Crusher Man, we hear that your daughter is now attending Hero High. How do you feel about this?” the camera shifted to a muscle-bound man with a wrecking-ball logo on his chest. “Well, I’m both happy and sad. Priscilla has always been a very troublesome girl to deal with, but I’m very fond of her and not too sure what life will be like without her at my side. I’m almost hoping my enemies attempt to kidnap her so she won’t be too bored all day.” Nina laughed as Priscilla muttered something and moved off. The girl changed the channel again. “We’re live at the scene of Hero High, where an explosion took place just a little while ago. We have been assured that this is not anything to be concerned about, and decided that interviewing some students would be interesting. Our first room is five hundred and fifty seven of Helio Dormitory.” Nina and Ria both jumped up as there was a knock on the door. Kai appeared in front of it and opened it, scowling slightly.

“Ah! You’re the demigod Kai, right?” the reporter asked, looking excited.

“Yes.” Kai replied calmly. “If you want to interview somebody, however, interview Priscilla. I don’t do interviews.” He pointed to Priscilla, and vanished. The reporter and her cameraman moved into the room, and were shortly talking very rapidly to Priscilla. Amused, Nina watched her TV to see what was going on from that point of view. However, right as Priscilla began talking, the door slammed open and an exhausted but triumphant Aquila dragged in a burnt Balar.

“Got him!” she yelled, oblivious to the camera, which had turned her way. “What was this thing doing in our room, anyways!?”

“Um, he’s Ria’s friend.” Nina said. “And, uh… You’re live on TV, you know.” Aquila looked over to the camera, stared for a moment, then conjured up a wall of flames to hide behind as she ran into her room. Balar sighed in relief and jumped into Ria’s arms.

“She may have great—“ he broke off as Nina glared at him.. “Er, athletic skills, but she’s even more of a demon then I am.” Balar muttered, curling up. “I’ve never been scared of fire before…”

“A talking cat. That’s a little unusual.” The reporter said, getting attention again. She moved the Microphone to Balar’s mouth. “So, are you a shape-shifter?” Balar shrugged.

“In a way, I suppose.” He said. Rai’s hands gripped him a little harder. “But, uh, I don’t like talking about myself, so could you move on?” the reporter nodded, and the cameraman shifted over to Nina and Ria.

“How do you two feel about Hero High so far, and about being in a dormitory with such unusual roommates?” the cameraman asked. The reporter woman discreetly kicked him.

“I like it!” Nina replied instantly, working to get attention away from Ria, who was sweating nervously. “Before, I always had to really hide my powers and stuff, and I never got to have any fun. But now I can actually use them a lot more, and the teachers supposedly encourage using them creatively and constructively. I don’t mind my dormmates, either, because it’s not like they’re special to me. They’re just… regular superpowered people, I guess.” Ria nodded in agreement. “Anyways, you should probably get going, because we still have some work to do.” The girl said cheerfully. Fifteen seconds later, the reporter and cameraman were out of the room. “Whew…”

“Hey! I never got to talk!” Priscilla shrieked.

“Tough luck.” Nina replied, watching as the commercials on TV ended and the interviews began again. Aquila finally peeked out of her room, found that the camera wasn’t there, and hurried out into the open again. “Why’d you run off?”

“I wasn’t prepared to be on Live TV!” the girl replied. “I panicked!” Nina shrugged absentmindedly and turned off her TV.

“Well, it’s getting late, so we should get to bed.” The girl said, checking her watch. “Don’t want to oversleep on the first day, after all!” she laughed and snuck under her covers, changing into her modest nightwear there. “’Night, Ria!”

Good night. Ria wrote on her notepad, smiling. Aquila muttered something, then conjured a fire in mid-air between Ria and Nina’s beds.

“There. You’ll be a lot warmer.” She said. Three of the tendrils making up Kai’s barrier pulled out to make a door-sizes space, and the boy stuck his head out of his miniature room.

“Oy. Any of you mind if I seal our room properly?” he asked. There were no objections. Shrugging, the boy moved back into his chamber, and his door shut itself again. A moment later, much smaller tendrils covered the window and barred the door completely, making the room much more secure in case a villain tried to kidnap any of them that night. Sighing, Nina flicked off the lights and pulled her blankets up to her chin, not really noticing how obscenely comfortable her bed was.

“…I hope I do all right…” she whispered, closing her eyes. A pillow hit her head a moment later.

“Shut up and go to sleep.” Priscilla said sharply. Nina shrugged and did just that.

Time for the Author’s Comments! XD

I’ll describe the dorm room in a little more detail later on. Right now I’m working on building up the characters. But geez, what a dorm room that would be… Two telekinetics, a demigod, a pyrokinetic mermaid, and a girl who doesn’t talk and has a very scary and currently unnamed ability. Oh, and a powerful demon in cat form.

Don’t expect me to explain what Ria does anytime soon. XD If ever. You’ll just have to guess for the whole series. If you can give me the correct answer (or something fairly close) in an E-MAIL, I’ll give you a treat or something. XP It won’t affect the story one bit. Answers via reviews will never be accepted under any circumstances. In fact, if you do that, I’ll delete your review if I can, and ban you from reviewing me if I can’t. I don’t want the FictionPress rules to be broken.
