“contemplation”

i’m staring at those stars
clinging helplessly
to the black velveteen sky.
they’re winking at me
as if they know some secret
and are planning an ill-fated surprise
for tomorrow.
tomorrow :: the day after today.
yesterday :: something i don’t want to remember.
the moon’s grinning
like a jack-o-lantern
with an elephant-tusk-ivory-white candle
and the eyes neglected.
or perhaps
its eyes
are those thousands
of glowing beads
sewn to the night sky
shining shamelessly.
i’m staring at those stars
and thinking ::
what if tomorrow never comes?
