A/N: This poem was written directly after I was watching the news. It was near midnight and they were intreviewing a police officer when someone fired a shot at them. I began to sob, it is too hard for me. I can't believe how much has changed so quickly. This poem as well has no real title, though I have been calling it Homeland, I feel that no title would fit to summarize my emotions.
A shot fired
Through the darkness of the night
I know that this is not right
People turn against each other
Protect their families
But not one another
I cannot turn my back
Now more than ever
The tears keep on coming
As more and more people
Share their haunting stories
One man lost his wife
Her hand slipped from his
In the flood waters
Gone in an instant
Another lost a baby daughter
Taken away on the bus
She was pushed back
Through the surging mob
This is not how it should be
Where is the togetherness
What about being united
When fighting is the result
What has happened to us
Shooting the police
Just how desperate have some become
Primal as they work to take control
Where chaos and destruction
Rule as number one
As aid arrives
I continue to pray
That those alive will survive
So many countless people
Now drowned in the waters
No where for them to have gone
As the waters came over their heads
Slowly they died
And are now gone
And dead
As they vainly wished
For another chance at life
So are we now wishing
That we had done more before
So now
Let the country come together
Give me hope and no more tears
Water, clothing, shelter
Help our people through the years
We need to be human
Feel the pain
Learn to help
Those people deserve to go on living
We must do all that we can
To make every life mean something
Let everyone continue
Their right to live
To breathe
Times are tough
We know that’s true
We must work together
Through the gloom and doom
So that our future will be bright
And no longer filled
With anger and fear
So lend a hand
And help bring back together
Our homeland
