A/N: Here's a little fic I wrote about Noah and Melanie (yes, based on the same people) a while ago. It's kind of fluffy, but not too bad. Please read and review!! Enjoy!!
“Ready to go?” Noah asked Melanie. They, along with Noah’s ex-girlfriend, Josie, had been practicing a song from “Singin’ in the Rain” for the choir concert the next day. (“Singin’ in the Rain” was the musical they had all taken part in three weeks previously.)
Melanie stopped unbuckling her character shoe and looked up at Noah. I love his eyes! she thought. “Just let me get these shoes off. Oh, actually, I have to go to my locker quickly.”
“Okay,” he said. “I’m not in any hurry.”
Josie walked over and picked up her backpack, which was on the floor next to Melanie. “The concert starts at 7:00 tomorrow, so we’re going to practice at six,” she said icily.
“I’ll be there,” Noah said tersely.
“Me too,” Melanie promised, slightly intimidated by the animosity between the two.
Josie turned on her heel and strode quickly out of the theater.
Melanie stood up and slipped on her flip-flops. Noah handed her her backpack and then grabbed his own. “Thanks,” she said. He is so considerate!
Noah turned off the work lights and they left the auditorium. They walked down the hall without speaking, until Noah broke the silence.
“I wish Mrs. Stanger wasn’t making us do ‘Broadway Melody’ for the choir concert.”
“Why?” Melanie asked, and then thought, Duh! It’s just a little obvious! Why did I say that?
“In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s a little awkward.” He sighed. “Josie isn’t exactly happy with me right now.”
Melanie nodded. “Yeah. What exactly happened between you two, if you don’t mind my asking? The school is full of rumors, of course, but they’re all so ridiculous.”
Noah paused, gathering his thoughts. “Josie is a wonderful girl. She’s smart, and talented…”
That’s not what I want to hear, Noah! Melanie thought, frustrated.
“…but she’s a very controlling person. I finally got tired of doing everything the way she wanted it done, of her making all my decisions for me, and I just told her that we needed to break up. Believe me, it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”
They stopped at Melanie’s locker, and she paused to turn the combination lock. “How long did you guys go out?” she asked conversationally.
He shrugged. “About a year and a half. It was definitely the best fourteen months of my life. But when musical season rolled around, between practicing lines with Josie, and her being the assistant choreographer, and hearing her talk constantly about the other choreographer, Andy, and the stress of kissing Robyn with Josie right there…” he trailed off. “I don’t know. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I was going crazy.”
Melanie zipped up her bag and closed her locker. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. It was all she could think of to say, following Noah’s confession.
The two friends walked in silence again. When they reached the breezeway, Noah held the door open for her. He’s such a gentleman!
Melanie looked out at the parking lot and noticed that it was sprinkling. “It’s raining,” she said. Thank you, Captain Obvious! she added to herself.
Noah nodded. “Yeah. Do you want to wait for it to stop?”
She shrugged. “I don’t care.”
“Let’s wait,” he said. He took off his book bag and sat down on the breezeway steps. Melanie did the same.
“I guess I never really got a chance to tell you how awesome you were in Singin’ in the Rain,” Melanie said, looking at him and trying not to get sucked into daydreams.
Noah flushed slightly. “Thanks. It was fun.”
“See? I told you you’d have a blast. Dancing’s not so bad after all, huh?”
He grinned. “You were right. By the way, I’m sorry I couldn’t come to your dance show with Jesse. Josie wanted to rehearse.”
“It’s okay. It wasn’t that great, anyway. Some of the pieces were really bad.”
“Well, I would only have come to see the pieces you were in, and I’m sure those were great,” said Noah. “You’re an amazing dancer.”
The butterfly feeling returned to Melanie’s stomach. I can’t believe he just said that!
The two friends gazed out at the rain for a while. Melanie could tell that the situation with Josie was weighing heavily on his mind. I feel bad for her. Honestly, I do, she thought. She had Noah, but she ruined it for herself. And I know Noah needs some time to get over her…but I wish he would realize how much I like him!
The raindrops began to fall faster. They hit the pavement like bullets and splashed on contact. The sky overhead had darkened ominously with clouds just waiting to burst.
“I don’t think the rain is going to let up anytime soon,” Noah observed. “Do you want to just go?”
“Sure,” said Melanie. She stood, self-consciously dusted off the seat of her pants, and swung her backpack over her shoulders. Noah picked up his bag and stood to his full height of six feet. We’re the perfect size for each other, Melanie noted for the hundredth time.
Noah looked down at her. “Thanks for listening to me,” he said. “I haven’t really been able to talk to anyone about that.”
“That’s what I’m here for,” Melanie said with a smile. “I’m always ready to listen.”
“That really means a lot,” he admitted. He looked out at the storm again. “Should we run for it?”
“No way. You’re not afraid of the rain after the musical, are you?”
He laughed. “Of course not!”
Slowly, cautiously, Melanie and Noah stepped out from under the shelter of the breezeway, as if they had never encountered water before. Feeling foolish, they looked at each other and grinned as they began to walk towards the parking lot.
Impulsively, Melanie began to sing. “Doo de doot doo doo de doodle doot doo de doodle…”
Noah joined her, and the speed of their walking increased with the song’s tempo.
“…I’m singin’ in the rain, just singin’ in the rain! What a glorious feeling – I’m happy again!” They raised their voices and began to dance without thinking.
They splashed through puddles; they joined hands and circled a sewer drain; they twirled away from each other; then they came back, slipping and sliding from the weight of their backpacks.
After what seemed like an eternity, the storm began to subside, and Melanie and Noah realized that they had reached his car.
The sun peeked out as the last few raindrops fell to earth. Noah wrapped his arms around Melanie and she laid her head against his chest. He stroked her hair and softly finished the song. “…I’m dancin’…and singin’ in the rain.”
Melanie slowly looked up at him. “I love you,” she whispered.
Noah smiled. “I love you too.”
A/N: Reviews make me happy like "Singin' in the Rain!" Gracias.
