Happy Valentine’s Day

I see your face

Wrinkled from years,

Now you eyes

Are covered in tears

-

The rest of the group

Smiles and says

“Happy Valentine’s Day

Dear Vet”

-

But I can’t leave

I’m drawn to your past

Just some silly trip

Or so I thought

-

I can’t imagine

All the battles you won and lost

I thought your face would soon fade

But, now it never will

-

A simple card

Handed out carelessly,

Smile, I thought

And just move away

-

But once I saw the tears

Steaming down your face

I knew I had to stay

-

Never did I think

That one disabled old man

Could mane me devise this plan

-

I must learn more about you

So the story will never die

About the war, what you did

And why

-

So now the story ends

And I decided to volunteer my time

To all those old veterans

With out families and denied.

A/N:I wrote this after handing out Valentines Day cards to old veterans at the local V.A. hospital
