Absence
I sit here in the quickly falling dusk
And look out over the valley.
The castle,
Our castle,
Is obscured in the misty gloom
Of the ensuing night,
It’s hill visible,
But the less than imposing structure
On top is not,
A visitor having no knowledge of its presence.
The streetlights below glint and twinkle
And the distant traffic lights change
Red, orange, green, orange, red,
Orange, green
In an endless cycle.
Red brake lights and white headlamps
Signify people going about their
Usual lives,
Unknowing of the love we share.
Beyond this brightness lies
Nothingness,
A vast expanse of daylight greenery
Turned to an empty void by the dusk.
The sky slowly turns from
Orange tinged blue to indigo,
To purple and finally
To blackness,
While tiny white moths
Flutter about my hunched body.
The world is as it should be.
And yet it does not feel that way.
Because you are not near me.
The paths we walked together
Bemoan your absent footsteps.
The views we admired
Cry out at your lost gaze.
My lips ache with longing
At the thought of your last kiss.
My chest desires to once again
Feel your beating heart.
And my own heart threatens to
Tear at the distance of your love.
