Chapter One: New Home
Jaime Conelly glanced up the street as she turned the corner on her way home to her new house. Just three months prior to May the sixteen year old’s mother had remarried a rich accountant who had three children of his own. So she and her twin brother Jeremy had reluctantly packed up all their belongings and moved with her to the small quaint town. The reluctance wasn’t so much for their new stepfather, since they found Martin Foster to be a very agreeable and kind man, but more so for his two older children. Preston and Pricilla Foster were more orless inclined to be the most disagreeable and stuck up people that the twin siblings had ever encountered. Both of them like their younger sister had auburn hair, Preston’s being short and well groomed while Pricilla’s was long and curly. Their younger sister Lucy, the only sibling to which the twins agreed was sweet and adorable being that she was only seven years old had medium length auburn hair that was usually up in two short pigtails and bright blue eyes that shone whenever she was excited. Her siblings had green eyes like their late mother. Compared to the Fosters, Jeremy and Jaime were both brunettes and had big brown eyes like their mother who could have easily modeled for her career. She was an art teacher however and worked at the local college. Martin and Tabitha, the twin’s mother had met at a high school reunion. She had gone with an old college flame and the flame happened to be a friend of Martin when they were in tenth grade. They had hit it off right away and had dated for a year before deciding to tie the knot. After so much grief in losing her husband to a mysterious accident three years ago, the twins were happy to see that their mother had once again found happiness. It was this very thing that Jaime was thinking about as she entered the large gate that led into the front yard of her new house. She placed her backpack in front of her, sighed and then walked up the driveway that circled around a medium sized flower garden, neatly trimmed by the house gardeners.
Once inside the house Jaime removed her jacket and smoothed down the skirt of her school uniform. She placed her backpack down for a moment as she brushed a strand of her short brown hair from her eyes. She removed her shoes, picked up her bag once more, and then walked towards the large staircase that led up to her room. As she passed Preston’s room she paused to hear him complaining to his friend on his cell phone about Jeremy again. She smiled softly to herself and sighed again. Unlike her brother she was attempting to make nice with her new stepsister, but Jeremy was doing everything he could to portray his dislike for his new stepbrother. Which wasn’t so hard, considering according to Preston that ever since he and his sister had started at their new school, that Jeremy was stealing all of the attention away from him. Jaime couldn’t blame her fellow students either, since her brother had always been popular no matter where he was. He was straight A student and an incredible athlete. And as for the looks department, he was voted in their last school, the best looking boy in their class. Things hadn’t changed for him at all in the new school and he constantly had boys and girls around just wanting to hang out with him, which infuriated Preston, since he used to be the most popular and most sought after guy to date in the school till Jeremy showed up. And since it did irritate Preston, Jeremy went out of his way to rub it in his face at every chance he could get. Jaime walked past Pricilla’s room next which was decorated all in pink. Pepto Bismal pink. It was so pink it would make a person sick by just looking at it if they didn’t care very much for the color, which in Jaime’s case, she did not. Priscilla had taken a different approach in her relationship with Jaime compared to her brother, which was to completely ignore her along with all her friends. It didn’t bother Jaime in the slightest since she already had a small group of friends and not unlike her brother she got along with everyone at school. Unlike him however she was not very athletic but was very studious. Especially when it came to her Social Studies classes. Ever since she was a little girl Jaime loved to learn about other places around the world and all their history. Her interest stemmed a lot from her father and his love for adventure. He had traveled all over the world by the time he had met the twin’s mother since his parents were both traveling musicians. Next she moved past the youngest of the Fosters Lucy’s room. Her room was decorated with butterflies of all colors. However the 2nd grader wasn’t home yet since school hadn’t let out yet so Jaime moved quickly toward the last two rooms down the hall before it turned a corner, where the parent’s room was located. She paused a moment at her brother’s bedroom door and saw that he was unpacking a box of cd’s and books and placing them onto a shelf as his radio blared the sounds of Linkin Park. He was wearing a pair of baggy blue jeans and ablack tea shirt as he unpacked. His short brown hair hung in his eyes since his bangs were kind of long and he hummed along to the music as he placed some of the cd’s onto his bed. He glanced behind him as he heard her sigh.
“Hey” he grinned.
“Hi. Listen I heard what you did at school today?” she said her eyebrows furrowing a little.
“And you have come here to reprimand me?” he teased.
“Why can’t you at least try to get along with him Jere?”
“I don’t want to” he shrugged, “Preston and I do not see eye to eye and we never will. Besides he started it” he shoved a bunch of his books onto the shelf.
“How did he start it?”
“He was the one who was egging me on in the cafeteria. So I had to prove him wrong on the court. I wiped the floor with him too” he smirked satisfactorily.
“And I suppose you’re really proud of yourself?”
“Come on Jaim” he said looking at her directly as he sat on his bed which was covered with a rumpled blue comforter since he hadn’t made his bed that morning, “You don’t like them any more then I do.”
“But at least I am trying. For mom’s sake.”
“Don’t do that” he shook his head a bit guilty, “You wouldn’t be so forthcoming if you heard some of the things that Priscilla has been saying about you behind your back.”
“I don’t care” Jaime shook her head, “She’s entitled to her own opinion. Besides” she added sitting next to him, “It’s all hot air. She only doesn’t like me because of Danny.”
“Sommerfield? Uh” Jeremy grimaced making a face, “She has a crush on that loser?”
“Yea but I don’t.”
“Thank goodness. Well I know you wouldn’t. You have much better taste then that.”
“Thank you” she smiled, “Jere. You know. Things are going to get better. You know like mom says it’s just going to take time.”
“Yea. I know” he nodded somberly, “I like the school and all but I still can’t get used to this house. Do you know I walked into a room the other day and I didn’t even know it was there.”
“What was it?” she giggled slightly.
“The gym.”
“You’re kidding.”
“No. I’m not. I might even try it out sometime. When Preston’s not around,” he added.
“Well, he’s in his room now. And Priscilla is in hers getting all dolled up for something or other.”
“Probably a date. Hey maybe it’s Sommerfield. That would get him off your back. Or maybe I could” he added with a serious look.
“No that’s all right” she shook her head standing from the bed and moving to the door, “I can handle him. I’m going to do my homework” she picked up her backpack at the door where she had dropped it before she entered in.
“Okay. I already finished mine.”
“That doesn’t surprise me Mr. Straight A’s” she smiled as she faced him once more as she stood in the doorframe.
“That’s another reason he hates me” he indicated Preston.
“Oh. He’ll get over it. And if he doesn’t, oh well” she shrugged making him smile again as she departed for her own room which was the last door down the hall.
Once she entered her room, Jaime closed the door behind her and placed her bag onto her mahogany desk. Her room like her brother’s was very plain at the moment since they were still busy moving stuff into their rooms and hadn’t decided on a color or theme. She removed her black skirt and red tie from around her neck. Next she unbuttoned the white button down shirt and hung it back up into the closet. Finally she pulled a purple shirt and her own blue jeans out of the closet and put them on. Then she sat at her desk, which was directly next to her her large window seat window. The white curtains moved slightly as she opened the window to let the cool spring air in. She breathed in the scents of the flowers coming from the outside and glanced briefly at the large oak tree that was just outside her window. She could just imagine one night climbing out of her window and shimmying down the tree just for the fun of it. She shook her head of the silly notion and then sat down at her desk to start her Algebra homework. Outside the wind began to pick up as a figure moved past the family gate, his spiky blond hair taking in the appearance of the house before departing in a flash back down the sidewalk his hazel eyes taking in every landmark down the road.
