Kei’Lu: World of Dreams
The first dream: Seen

“At least keep the ring and think about it. I’ll try again someday.”

“Mother would be disappointed to know you gave such a lame proposal.”

“Yeah. Someone like you deserves something special.”

“No. This is enough.”

“I’ll think of something you’ll be proud of… because I love you too much.”

He awoke with a start, remembering those words. Pale skin flushed over ever so slightly, chest heaving as he sought to catch his breath. That was no dream. He remembered when he had spoken those words as clearly as if It were yesterday. Defiance pulled his shades off; massaging his temples as golden eyes slid shut His mate did indeed deserve a better proposal than the one he could give. With a soft groan, he pulled his knees to his chest, resting his head on outstretched arms.

A shadow loomed over him, blocking the glare of the sun from the building roof on which he sat. “Having that dream again?” Rebellion asked, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he looked down at his twin.

“Yeah.” Defiance replied, not needing to lift his head. He knew his twin well enough to know that he was there. Rebellion reached out, fingers lightly passing through spiked hair so much like his own. The lavender-tipped strands passed through his fingers quite easily, the feeling he knew Defiance found comfort in. His twin was plagued by that recurring dream; one of an unfulfilled duty.

No… not a duty.

A promise.

Defiance stared on, down to the desolate streets below them. People walked on in their rags, unmindful of the desolation, unmindful of each other, unmindful of the two shadows overhead. “Mortals…” Rebellion sighed with a shake of his head as Defiance studied them, seemingly lost in the rhythm of these humans scurrying about like worker ants. “You gotta hand it to ‘em… the way they adapt to the changing times.” He went on. Defiance merely nodded as his eyes scanned the city. Children played amongst the rubble, laughing happily as they climbed up and over the ruins of a mighty skyscraper that once proudly bore the name of Raege Industries. Mothers nursed their children in barely furnished apartments, their husbands wasting away in order to find support for their hungry families. But what was a family, really? Many an idea had grown obsolete in the reemergence of man. The survivors of the apocalypse, of the last day were merely shells of the grandeur humanity once was.

Rebellion moved his fingers through his own ruby tipped strands. “We’re the ones who move the world, Def. Right now, we don’t have time to worry about ourselves.” He said, clapping a hand on his brother’s shoulder. Defiance smirked up at his twin. “Easy for you to say. You get to see him a lot.” He chuckled, getting up from his perch.

“Yeah well, his cause falls under my jurisdiction.” Rebellion replied.

“How’s that going for you?”

“Pretty good. We’re getting somewhere.”

“Yeah?”

They both leaped from the roof as they spoke, making their way over other rooftops. As they continued their journey, Defiance felt someone’s eyes on him. The presence wasn’t at all unwelcome. He’d felt it before. He always did. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a shadow look down at him from a distant rooftop. “Def? Something wrong?” Rebellion asked. Defiance stopped, watching the shadow. “Hey…” he whispered to it, as if it was close enough to hear. “I miss you, too.”

Rebellion approached his twin. His gaze shifted from him to whatever he was looking at. There was nothing to see. The shadow had gone.

The twins continued their journey and came to a stop at a rundown building in an abandoned part of town. Rebellion nodded at Defiance, slipping into the window of one certain room. Defiance sat on the windowsill, looking into the familiar scene. The room was completely bare; wallpaper that peeled off walls that hadn’t been touched by human hands in over a decade, ever since the last day, floorboards that creaked at each step. On the floor was a mattress and on this mattress was the skeletal figure of a young woman.

She seemed at least in her late teens, disheveled hair that must have once shone with the vibrancy of womanhood now limp with grease and neglect. Her sunken eyes looked at Defiance, looked right through him and out the window. He tilted his head somewhat, watching the way her emancipated cheeks sought to find a breath that could perhaps save her. A young boy sat by the makeshift bed, looking up as he heard Defiance approach.

“She can’t see us, bro.” He said as the boy rose. “I know.” Replied the younger figure, shaking his ashen-blonde head. “I just can’t help but think that we could do something for her.” He sighed. Rebellion pulled himself from the wall, arms folded across his chest. “We can’t. The only thing we can do is make sure her spirit goes where its supposed to when she dies.” He replied, approaching his siblings. The boy let out a small pout. “Poor humans…” he sighed.

“It’s a way of life, Fear. Get over it.” Said a voice from the darker corners of the room. The boy looked up as he heard his name called. “Pain!” he said in realization. Grey eyes turned to all three as the newcomer approached. “How’s it hanging, niisan? Aniki?” he asked, turning to the twins in turn. Rebellion nodded at their little brother. “Been good. The others coming?” he asked. “Panic and Rage may be coming by later, I dunno.” He replied.

The four remained in silence, watching over the sick female as she fell into a deep sleep. Defiance sighed as he shut his eyes, slumping back against the wall. He winced at an onslaught of emotion from the mortal. “She’s falling too far into your jurisdiction, Fear.” He warned.

Fear looked up with a start and grasped the female’s hand. “What’s going on anyway?” Rebellion asked, kneeling beside his younger brother. “Nightmares. I don’t have any jurisdiction over those.” Fear replied. Pain merely smirked. “Wakey-wakey then, little lady.” He grinned, pressing two fingers to the female’s stomach. Her stomach muscles tightened beneath the spot he touched, closing in on itself, squeezing her already empty belly and further heightening the pangs of hunger.

The female awoke with a start, bloodshot eyes jerking open. Fear fell back, landing on his backside, stunned by the sudden movement. Pain remained as calm as ever, cracking his knuckles, a rather triumphant look on his face.

Defiance blinked from his post. “Best way to wake her up, huh?” he asked, smirking at Pain. “It brings her back to Fear’s jurisdiction.” Pain replied, folding his arms behind his head. Defiance turned his eyes to their little brother. Fear lightly clutched her hand, petting it fondly as the female looked around the room in the manner of a frightened kitten.

He sighed, looking up at the others. “I can’t save her from dreams that plague her when she sleeps but these waking dreams, these illusions are under me.” He explained. “Her own worst fears…” Rebellion murmured.

With a sigh, Defiance began to pace the room. “So where do you guys think the nightmare is now?” he asked, glancing around. Rebellion looked up, joining his twin’s search. “Don’t know but this is a critical moment. If it gets away with her soul…” he murmured. Defiance studied the shadows, trying to find the little creature known as the nightmare.

“Are you even sure there’s a nightmare around here?” Pain asked. Fear turned to him, nodding. “I saw it in here awhile ago. I thought it ran away when Def-nii and Rev-nii came in.” he said. Rebellion smirked at this. “Yeah, they usually do.” He laughed.

Near the windowsill came a shrill shriek and the sudden cry of “ONIISAMA-TACHI!” The four siblings turned to see a boy with an oversized book trying to swat at a large creature made of out the deepest pitch. The animal’s soulless eyes glowed deep red, snarling as it kept its gaze on his hapless victim. The boy cowered back, his hand gripping the large tome and flailing about with it viciously. Fear let out a loud gasp. “The nightmare’s got Panic!” he cried. Defiance nodded, materializing a longsword in his hand. “Already on it, little bro.” He called, leaping into the air and smashing the blade onto the creature’s head.

It let out a loud roar, turning to Defiance. Its eyes burned an even deeper red, seething at him with great hatred. “C’mon!” Defiance provoked, beckoning to it. “I’m the one you want!” “Def-nii!” Panic whimpered. He gave out another shriek when he felt something tighten its grip on the back of his robes.

“Geez!” Rebellion laughed, hoisting his brother up.

“No wonder why the nightmare’s after you. You’re a screamer!”

Panic clung to his brother, relieved that he was at least somewhere safe. “Niisan!” he cried cheerfully, all smiles once more. “Rev-nii!” Fear suddenly cried in alarm. The nightmare’s massive tail came crashing down on Rebellion, slamming him into a wall. “Crap…” the older twin grunted, getting up, shaking his head from the stupor of the sudden impact. Panic, separated from his brother scrambled over to where Pain and Fear were.

Pain narrowed his eyes at the monster. “My turn.” He glowered, leaping into the fray. Charging his energy, he released it in the form of golden chains, securing the nightmare’s claws down. “Now, Defiance!” he cried.

Defiance nodded at his younger sibling, driving the blade into the creature’s back. Rebellion turned to Fear. “Alright, you two. Get ready to seal it off!” he called. Already, Fear began to trace the ward of sealing on the ground. It manifested itself into a glowing ring, outlined by words written in a language man had long forgotten. The mark of Chaos glowed brightly within the ring, its light mingling with both Fear and Panic’s auras.

“Def, get out of there!” Rebellion ordered.

The light grew brighter. Fear and Panic bother seemed lost in their chanting, murmuring the words of sealing. The ward appeared beneath the nightmare, light and the Chaos mark intensifying in its glow.

The creature let out a loud roar, thrashing as if straining to free itself from the magical bonds that kept it down. As Defiance stepped away, the light surrounded the monster. Its roars ceased with a flash of light Specks of what seemed to be embers rained from the sky, surrounding the siblings. Rebellion turned his gaze to the mattress where the sick female still lay, oblivious to the battle that had just transpired. “It’s always the dreams of the sick and the needy that cause the most trouble.” He sighed. Defiance just nodded. “Wonder what the hell woulda happened if she could actually see us..” he wondered.

“Oh, I don’t know.” Pain chuckled. “Scream?”

The door to the room creaked open. “Onechan?” asked the soft voice coming from a male teen who timidly opened the door. “Must be her brother…” Pain observed. As the boy shut the door behind him, he let out a sharp gasp. “You…!” he cried, staring wide eyed at the five. The bowl of soup he carried upon a tray fell to the ground, breaking upon impact on the hard wooden floor.

They all turned to the male. His messy blonde hair did nothing to hide the shock in his bright green eyes. Rebellion nodded at his siblings, a wordless order to stay silent. “Who the hell are all of you and what are you going to do to my onechan?” the boy demanded. Rebellion stood there, stunned.

“You can see us?” he asked.
