Numb
1 A moment in time
“Now class, I’m passing back the quizzes that you took yesterday, and you will have to correct someone else’s paper,” said Mrs. Tingle, my seventh period Algebra II teacher. She is a skinny five foot five toothpick with short blond hair. She was dressed in a pink floral print that came down to her kneecaps. The style didn’t help her very much. She just hates me. I can only guess it’s because I always correct her on her own math work. That always gets her panties in a bunch.
Mrs. Tingle slowly made her way down the row of desks passing out quizzes for us to correct. She stopped at my desk, which is the second one in the last row next to the large bay windows, and slammed down the two-page quiz on my desk.
“Here you go Miss McDonnell. I do hope that you can take time out of your oh-so busy day to correct one of your classmate’s quizzes,” Mrs. Tingle said with her bitchiest attitude.
“Well, thank you Mrs. Tingle. I’ll try my best to correct this just for you,” I replied sarcastically with a big fake smile on my face.
“Don’t take that attitude with me young lady! Remember, I’m the teacher, and you are the student!”
“Yes, unfortunately Mrs. Tingle, I know this very well thanks to you. You do remind me on a daily basis.”
“Good to hear it then,” Mrs. Tingle said, trying to get her last two cents in. She swaggered her skinny ass down to the next desk to hand them their own quiz to correct.
I shrugged off Mrs. Tingle’s poor attempt to put me in my place to look at the quiz she placed on my desk. It belonged to Ben Silver. He sat in front of me. He and I used to be so close up until we came to high school, that when everything changed. He started hanging with the stoners to fit in and we drifted apart.
Yet Ben isn’t what you would call your normal high school stoner. He’s got a handsome look to him with well-carved facial features on top of his gangly six foot two fame. He keeps his short cut raven black hair untamed and wild which shows off his oddly colored eyes that are onyx black swirled with a bit of gold in them.
As soon as I touched the top page of his paper a cold shiver ran down my spine. My whole body went numb. My ears popped, and my eyes locked open. My vision went black and white as if a short real movie was playing right before my eyes.
Mrs. Tingle was talking about something in the front of the room. I was sitting in my seat behind Ben. A small jagged rock throw by a lawn mower came through the window next to Ben, and went through the temple of his head. Blood, brains, and glass scattered all over the floor around me. I was in such a shock, but for some reason I looked at the clock that read 1:30 on the dot.
“Miss McDonnell if you stare at that paper any harder you will burn a hole in it.” Mrs. Tingle joked. “What are you doing exactly?”
My heart was racing, and beads of sweat were dripping from both sides of my forehead. My eyes were burning from the image I had just seen. I had no idea what the hell had just happened to me, but I knew I had to stop what I saw from happening. The wall clock just above Mrs. Tingle’s head read 1:29, and just seconds before 1:30.
“Um….., Mrs. Tingle. There is someone at the door!” I frantically said to Mrs. Tingle to get her to look away. I then kicked Ben’s chair right out from under him, sending him to the floor just as the rock came smashing through the window. The rock flew across the room and stuck in a nearby wall.
“Oh my God!” yelled Tommy Martin who was near the wall. With his yell, the whole class gasped, and Mrs. Tingle turned around to the horror that had passed.
“What the hell just happened?” she yelled dementedly to the class.
“Well, Mrs. Tingle” Ben said as he got himself up off the floor, and put his chair right side up again. His eyes lingered with me for a moment, and then back to Mrs. Tingle. “I fell out of my chair, and that rock came out of nowhere and nearly hit me.”
“I’m going to have to take your word for that Mr. Silver,” Mrs. Tingle said. She looked over at the shattered glass and sighed. “Well, I guess I’m going to have to call the janitor to get that glass cleaned up along with that wall. So class, just put your quizzes on my desk, and leaves the room right now so that none of you get cut.”
We all picked up our things, and began pouring out into the empty hallway. As I walked to my locker, I couldn’t get the image of Ben’s dead body out of my mind. I still had no idea how I was able to do or see what could have just happened.
