Yeah
i said, "yeah"
and there was silence
the horizon was a spectacle
with the sun hovering, orange
a beautifully cold warmth
depressing, you muttered
and i said, "yeah"
wondering what you meant
me, or the breeze
maybe the sand in our shoes
so i took them off
turning to take yours
you put a hand, "no"
and there was silence
awkward, uncomfortable
and we look at the sun again
thinking our silent thoughts
wondering why we're like this
this and that, yes and no
"it's so hard, isn't it?"
your eyes looked away
and there was silence
the kind that kills
slowly, unkindly
as the sun dipped deeper
fading like the tears
in your eyes and on the sand
when you turned and questioned why
"are you waiting for me?"
you asked it like you never knew the answer
with us, it's yes and no, this and that
there never really was a choice
like the going of the sun
like the coming of night
"yes, i am and no, i'm not"
i could've said but i didn't
so you asked me a second time
but phrased another way
"do you love me?"
the sea swallowed the sun
and only the moon shone
the light was pale, ethereal
you already know, don't you
i would say the same thing again
then you will silently cry
the way you are now
i know and i'm sorry
so as i look in your eyes
i said, "yeah"
