Sometimes,
When I look in the
mirror,
I can swear I see your face
Solemnly peering back at me
From behind my own darkened eyes.
They used to be sky blue,
Before the flood of my heart.
But then they were overcome:
Succumbing to the wants of others unwillingly
Can turn even the brightest gem
Dark and dead.
So now,
My eyes are a smoky blue-grey,
With reddened veins
And darkened circles suspended beneath
As if they were pledge banners
Standing for everything happening on the inside.
One day the tide will go away,
Receding into the jaded dawn,
And my eyes will be aqua again,
Contented,
And the war banners will cease to unfurl.
What, are you feeling upset?
They know you here,
In this place of madness.
Bow your head and wait for the wave of sorrow
To pass your doorstep
As the daylight does.
Don’t fret, please;
Life is too short to remember.
Here, where my neck meets my shoulder:
This is the best place to find solace.
I love you,
You know I do.
I love to say it, anyway,
It feels like a weight is lifted off of me
As I grab you and hold you to me,
Covering your forehead with hidden kisses
And swaying to and fro absentmindedly,
Filled with a love that nothing can compare with.
It a bit backwards,
Parenting a parent,
But if anyone cared,
They wouldn’t dare say a word,
For fear of our bond crushing them under its enormous bulk.
Author’s Notes: Just a little something to tell my friend how much I love her…
