Breaking Down the Barriers
Ch.1 The New Kid
OoooOoooOoooOoooOoooO
Al sat in his first class listening to the humdrum of his classmates talking around him. English is way too boring for first period, he thought to himself as he placed his head in his hands.
“Hey are you listening to me?” Clara asked annoyed.
“What oh yeah sorry,” Al said turning around to face his best friend. The desks in the classroom were in rows of two. Al at the moment didn’t have someone to sit next to as there was an odd number of students in the class so he had chosen to sit alone. It wasn’t that he wasn’t popular he just liked to sit alone in first period in case he fell asleep. Behind him sat Clara and next to her was her boyfriend Jake.
Now there is something odd about Clara. She had purple hair. Of course it wasn’t naturally purple, as Al thought. She did such a good job in dying her hair you couldn’t tell what color it originally was, as she had also died her eyebrows. Her eyes, as Al knew for a fact, were blue though she always wore purple contacts. As you could see she had a slight obsession with purple. Two long locks of her hair framed her face and fell past her shoulders. The rest was cut at her shoulders. Today she had on a tight purple shirt and a matching miniskirt.
“Why do you bother talking to him in the morning? You know he’s always half asleep,” Jake said laughing lightly. Now Jake had blonde hair that was cut short and blue eyes. He crossed his jean covered legs under the desk and poked Al in the forehead.
“That’s not true!” Al shot back, swatting Jake’s hand away. Jake just smirked.
“Well as I was saying,” Clara said trying to divert the two from the oncoming fight, “Aren’t we getting a new student today?”
“Um… I think so,” Al said pushing away a stray strand of caramel colored hair.
“All right class quiet down. We have a new student,” the teacher, Mrs. Dumont, said loudly. When she said this Al turned around. There standing next to Mrs. Dumont was the most adorably hot boy Al had ever seen. Wait did I just think he was adorably hot? Al shook it off and tried to tone out the annoying squeals of how cute the new boy was from the girls. Adorably hot were Al’s own words. See there isn’t a word for adorably hot so he put them together and made that.
“Wow he’s so cute!” Clara whispered loudly.
“I don’t see it,” Jake said.
“You’re just jealous,” Clara said staring intently at the boy. Al had to admit he was kind of cute. He had chin length hair that was as black as the night sky. Hidden underneath his bangs were brilliant emerald eyes. However they were cold and emotionless as if he had blocked himself from the outside world. He wore a red t-shirt and jeans.
“This class is Shane Emmit. Shane is from Chicago,” Mrs. Dumont said. “Shane you can sit next to Alphonse Drone,”
“It’s Al!” Al called out from his seat. He hated his full name with a passion. Mrs. Dumont however continued on as if he hadn’t said anything.
“And since you are the only Peer Leader in this class you can show him around the building once school is over,” she said pointedly. Al groaned he had things to do after his classes ended and the school was large.
“Oh man you are soooo lucky I wish I had gotten into Peer Leaders!” Clara said disappointedly. Al just shrugged. That was what happened when your dad is the principal. He had a feeling his father had pushed a little and made him become one instead of Clara who deserved to be the Peer Leader. Now Peer Leaders were a group of kids who helped new kids get acquainted to the school. They also helped some of the students with school work and with there “problems”. The only reason he tried to get in was because his dad made him. He said it was good for college. Not that he cared since he was only a freshman in High School.
Shane slowly walked over to the desk next to Al. Up close Al could tell that Shane was a few inches shorter then himself. Shane quietly sat down and pulled out a notebook and a pen.
“Hi, I’m Al,” Al said introducing himself.
“I know,” Shane said coldly looking up at the teacher. Al was taken back by the ice in his voice after all he was just trying to be friendly.
“I’m Clara! And this is Jake,” Clara said excitedly from behind.
“Her boyfriend,” Jake added.
“Shane,” was the only reply given.
“Class be quiet!” Mrs. Dumont said sternly. At this the class quieted down. Throughout the entire period Al kept sending glances in Shane’s direction. He noted that his eyes had specks of blue in them. But throughout the entire class they were emotionless, even when Jonas fell of his chair twice. Finally the bell rang and the entire class stood up to leave.
“Remember you’re to read chapters 1-3 of A Walk to Remember,” their teacher called out after them.
“Augh why do we have to read that book?” Jake complained.
“Oh it’s a wonderful book! I know you’ll love it!” Clara said excitedly. She loved to read and always did.
“But it’s a girl book,” Al countered. Clara just huffed and headed off in the direction of the home ec. room. Al looked over and saw Shane heading off down one hallway.
“Hey let me bring you to your next class,” Al said walking over to Shane.
“I don’t need your help,” Shane said glaring up into Al’s amber eyes. Al just stared back into those emerald eyes. It was like he was trapped, he couldn’t look away from those green eyes. Finally Shane relented and handed over his schedule to Al, who grabbed it and began to study it. It turned out that he and Al had 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 8th period together. Right now they both had Honors Bio together. Al quickly told Shane about the classes they had together though he didn’t look very happy.
Al grabbed Shane’s hand and pulled him off to the science wing. Al started to talk about random things to Shane though Shane didn’t acknowledge anything. They reached Mr. Zanubus’s classroom, which was at the end of the wing. Science was Al’s favorite subject and rushed into the classroom and took his seat in the middle of the room. Shane went up to the teacher who told him to sit two seats in front of Al. Shane took his seat and as he had done in English pulled out a notebook. When the rest of the class filed into the room Mr. Zanubus started to speak.
“Ok today you will be getting your first project,” the class groaned audibly, “Yes yes I know how you all hate projects. Now you will work with a partner, that I will assign, and you two will make a model of a virus, that again I have assigned.” The class groaned again.
“Now let’s see Mark and Joe you two will work together,” the twin brothers high-fived each other happily. “Now who should Shane partner with?” Mr. Zanubus said looking down at his class chart thoughtfully. The girls in the class, all seeing how cute Shane was, all raised their hands excitedly squealing out “Me” or “I will”. Now Mr. Zanubus was the kind of teacher that wouldn’t pick you if you were, as he said, acting like monkeys. So since all of the girls were squealing it was natural that he would pick a boy. This boy was Al.
Al was rather happy about this. He really wanted to get to know this boy better. He didn’t really know why but he really liked being around him and he would get all floaty. Shane briefly turned around and Al flashed him a bright smile. The smaller boy quickly turned around. I saw something in his eyes briefly… at least I know he’s not totally emotionless. Al thought to himself.
The girls who were all disappointed groaned in protest but quickly quieted up when Mr. Zanubus started pairing up people again. The bell rang after Mr. Zanubus finished talking about the project and had handed out the papers. Al and Shane’s virus was the common cold. Al was going to talk to Shane about the project but he couldn’t find him anywhere and so he headed off to his 3rd period class.
He sat down next to Clara in History class. The teacher started to drone on about some war or something, the two friends weren’t paying much attention.
“Hey did you find out if Shane is in any of my classes?” Clara asked excitedly.
“Yeah but it was hard he’s so like emotionless and stuff…,” Al said and blew his hair out of his eyes.
“Well what classes?” Clara asked impatiently.
“He’s in my 1st, 2nd, 5th, and our 8th period classes,” Al said while jotting down notes.
“Lucky he’s in half of your classes and only two of mine,” Clara said pouting.
“Hey remember Jake you know your boyfriend?” Al said trying to stir her memories.
“I know that stupid,” Clara said hitting Al’s head, “But I can still look at cute guys if I want to.”
“Jake would disagree with that,” he chastised playfully.
“If your riveting conversation is over would you please pay attention!” Miss Blake said angrily. The two friends bowed their heads in a way of saying sorry and Miss Blake continued on with her lesson.
Al, Jake, and Clara all had gym next period. Al really liked gym since he was pretty good and they played basketball a lot, he was on the team. Too bad Shane isn’t in my class... I bet he has a really nice body… Woah! Why did I just think that! Guys aren’t supposed to like other guys like that right? Al shook his head and finished changing into his gym clothes. The brunette sighed and walked into the gym.
Gym class always seemed shorter then it really was and the three friends soon found themselves in the courtyard with their lunch trays looking for a place to eat.
“Oooh over this way!” Clara said pulling the other two towards the large cherry blossom tree in the center of the courtyard. There sat Shane but he wasn’t alone there were several girls around him cooing loudly. Shane obviously didn’t want them there by the way he shot death glares in each of the girls’ directions.
“All right all right get away from him,” Jake said loudly. Unfortunately the girls didn’t listen. Knowing words wouldn’t work Al swatted all the girls away with his arms sending them away. As each one left they glared at him.
“Thanks,” Shane said gruffly and continued to eat his sandwich. And although it was faint Al was positive he heard some gratitude in his voice.
“So how do you like it here so far?” Clara asked sitting down next to Shane and starting to eat. Shane just shrugged and continued to eat in silence. The three friends talked the lunch period and occasionally they got an answer from Shane. The lunch period ended and Al began to lead Shane to Honors Math.
“Come my friend off to the dungeons of Malone,” Al said giggling lightly.
“F-friend?” Shane asked looking up into Al’s eyes. His own emerald eyes softened a bit as they looked into pools of amber.
“Yeah of course what else would you be?” Al told him not moving his gaze from Shane’s eyes. They looked much better when they had some emotion in them. And for the first time in a long while Shane smiled. It was small but a smile nonetheless.
