PrologueElli
I peered around the corner of the hallway into my parent's room. I saw only my father, Prince Roy of Elimine sitting on the double bed, his red hair lank and dripping and his vivid blue eyes fixed on the door to the balcony, where I could make out the figure of my mother, Queen Kiara of Elimine, her silhouette just visible against the large, full moon. A breeze caused her long hair and nightdress to dance and she shifted herself to face it, her arms open and embracing the wind.
Dad got up and joined Momma on the terrace. He left the door open, so I could hear every word.
Momma spoke first. "You shouldn't be outside, Roy: you're dripping wet."
"Well, I just got out of the bath, what would you expect?" Dad answered jokingly, but his tone became serious as he continued, "But really, what's wrong, Ki? What's the news? You're very pale…"
I heard Mom sigh. "The Wolves have invaded Rethe and taken several lives, as well as captives."
"What?!"
I said the same thing under my breath. Why had the Wolves invaded? While they weren't exactly peaceful, they had never actually invaded before…
Apparently, Momma nodded, because Dad's voice was weak when he next spoke. "Do you know if Kris, Mir, Nathan and Shadow are alright?"
"I've no word of Shadow, as she was out when the attack occurred, but Nathan is sending his children here for safety. He knows that the Wolves would never invade Elimine because I'm here, as well as Samuel and Felicity. I don't think that they knew Nathan was in Rethe, otherwise, they might not have invaded.
I nodded. Samuel, Felicity and Nathan were all former Sages. Samuel, now Captain of Elimine's guard was Flarus, Sage of Fire; Felicity, regent, was formerly Aquarus, Sage of Water; and Nathan used to be Darthus, Sage of Darkness.
Mir, Kris and Shadow had traveled and assisted Mom in her attack on Lord Hanon, former dictator of our land.
"Kris said that she and her daughter will be alright and that Mir is coming here to help with the peace negotiations," Momma continued, running a hand through her icy blue hair and sighing. "Why did this have to happen during MY reign? Why not Franz's or someone else's? I hate war."
Franz was my older brother and next in line to the throne.
Dad hugged Mom close and stroked her head. "It'll be alright. If we have to, we'll take up arms and fight."
Mom pulled away. "No, Roy. I don't want to fight. It's wrong. I don't wish to take innocent lives, even if it's in self-defense."
Dad took her hands. "That's what I like about you; you're not afraid to do what you have to, but you are a merciful and kind soul, like your mother."
Momma's mother was Luminia, Sage of Light and her father had been Galen, Sage of Wind. Luminia was said to have been the kindest person in Calembel. I made me feel proud to have such noble ancestors.
Then, I heard the balcony door close and my parents reentered their chambers, Mom's golden eyes closed as she lay her head on Dad's shoulder. I quietly crept back to my own chambers, musing over what I'd just heard.
War was coming and I didn't know how to stop it.
