5 Years Later:

Kay:

Dear Carter,

Life has past me by so quickly. Since my book has been published, I have been on edge. I am always seeing non-existant FBI agents, or Ali. Technically they are one and the same, but in my mind they are very different. I miss you dearly and I hope that wherever you are that your life is not nearly as complicated as mine.

I have to go.

Love,

Kay

I understand that it is a little weird to write to “Cater” but it somehow sooths me.

I-

Hold on a sec, someone is at the door.

“Who is it?” I asked

“I’m here on behalf of Waterman Publishing Company.” The voice replied

“Okay, one moment.”

But the woman standing on the other side of the door was most certainly not an employee of Waterman Publishing.

“Hello Kay.” She said

“What? Who are you? Are you really from the publishing company? And who told you my name is Kay? It’s Eliza, not Kay.” I lied

“Really? Well then I suppose I was mistaken and you just happen to be her long lost twin.”

Apparently there was no fooling her.

“Alright you got me. Whatcha gonna do huh? Arrest me?” I smirked

“Not if you come peaceably.” She answered

“Well sorry to bust your bubble but that ain’t happening this day or any day. So thanks for the offer but I don’t really like the feel of cold metal against my skin, Ali.” I said as I grabbed my gun from underneath the pillow on the couch, “If you leave now I won’t shoot.”

“McKayla Nicole Miller, I don’t think you have the guts to shoot me, or anyone else for that matter.” Ali said with a sigh.

“No that is not completely true, there is one who I could kill by any means. Yes Ali you know who I’m talking about. Cart’s killer. Are you ready? Are you ready to find out who killed your son. You know what, Ali, I’m feeling sympathetic today so I’ll tell you. His name is Blake Redmond. Yes the same man who killed my mother.”

Well I’ve done it. I’ve left her completely speechless. Why? Well because according to every record in existence, Blake Redmond is dead. So the real question is, how can you cheat death?

“I’m sorry Ali, but it is with a heavy heart that I bid you farewell.” I told her as I jumped out the window.

“No! Kay no! Come back!” Ali shouted out the window as I jumped on my motorcycle and sped off.

Ali:

“This is Agent Shwartz calling for back-up. Subject is a 21-year-old woman on a blck motorcycle. Lisence plate reads, INDPNDNTWMN.” I said into the radio

“Yes ma’am. Right away.” A female voice responded.

“Meet on the corner of 168th an Ocean Boulevard” I said

“Roger that, over and out.”

Kay, why do you run? So find Blake and kill him? I have a newsflash for you, he’s already dead.

Hold on a sec where’d she go? Crap. She just disappeared, gone without a trace.

“This is officer Jessica McLay responding to the back-up call. I am 168th and closing in on Ocean Boulevard. Awaiting commands.” A new female voice said.

“Roger that, do you see a black motorcycle anywhere?” I asked

“Yes but the license plate reads VRJ895.” She responded.

“That’s alright. Stay there and wait for us. And while you’re waiting, start searching the area. Over and out.” I commanded

I picked up my cell phone and dialed the forensics lab number.

“Dan can you run this license plate number for me?” I asked into the cell

“Sure sweetheart.” Dan replied

“First don’t call me sweetheart, second the numbers are VRJ895.” I stated.

“Okay, license plate is registered to an Ashley Dunhill”

“Thanks Dan.” I said before hanging up.

Where are you going Kay, I thought to my self, Or more importantly, where are you going.

“Ali we’re here.” Said my partner of 5 years, Kevin McBright

“Thanks Kev.” I said as I exited the patrol car.

“Listen up everyone, I want to secure the area. No one gets in or out within a one mile radius.” I stated, “And which one of you is Jessica McLay?”

“I am” Came a voice from somewhere in the back

“Come here” I commanded, “And the rest of you, back to work.”

I waited as the somewhat crowded alley began to clear.

“Officer Mclay-” I started

‘You can call me Jessica.”

“”Alright Jessica, can you tell me anything about a McKayla Nicloe Miller?” I asked

“No ma’am, but I did meet a McKayla Shwartz on several occasions.” Jessica replied.

“Did you say McKayla Shwartz?”

“Yes Ma’am.” She replied.

“I cannot belive it.” I said under my breath.

“Excuse me?” Jessica inquired

“She still believes. But how why?” I mumbled to myself.

“What on earth are you talking about?” She exclaimed, “I’m sorry but you are making no sense whatsoever.”

“You’re right, let me explain. About 5 years ago my son was shot the only witness, a certain McKayla Nicole Miller. She was my bestfriend’s daughter and my son’s bestfriend/girlfriend. I remember that night so well. She came running into the house yelling and screaming about her mother’s death and a man. She was covered in blood. I don’t belive I will ever forget that night.” I explained

“But I still don’t understand.” Jessica pointed out.

“Let me finish. That night the only thing coming out of Kay’s mouth that I could understand was, ‘He was dead! I saw Him. Why does He kill everyone I love?’ I later found that ‘He’ was Blake Redmond and a definite as to who killed my son.” I finished

“And why is that?” She asked

“Because Blake Redmond Killed himself, along with my best friend, in a DWI accident years ago.” I stated

“Yes but are you sure he’s dead? People often have a way of coming back. Think about it. As a detective what is the most important thing to have, besides a forensics team? An open mind. That is the most important thing. Am I right detective?” Jessica inquired

“Well yes but it is impossible!” I shouted

“Nothing is impossible. Would you say that finding a cure for smallpox was impossible during the plague?” She asked

“That is entirely different. We are talking about raising the dead!” I said

“On the contrairy, we are talking about preventing it. Oh dear I must go my family will be waiting. It’s my husband’s birthday tomarrow and we’re having a party tonight. Goodbye.” Jessica said as she departed, “Good luck with the investigation.”

“Yes goodbye.” I mumbled more to myself than to anyone else, “Goodbye”

Kay:

Thank heavens for friends in high places and family with many homes. It’s off to Cody, Wyoming for me.
