Immortal

Shandi Gross

I have seen many things in my life. The dawning of new eras, catastrophes, miracles, and many a pointless war. I have seen new families start, and branch, until they cover most of the planet. Then they slowly die out from diseases, inbreeding, wars and all those happy complaints. Then like the weeds they are, they comeback. More, stronger, more ruthless, and more powerful. Of course there are always one or more people from each family who thinks that they’re better than everyone else, and that they alone are fit to rule the world. They soon realize that saying they can is a lot easier than actually doing it.

And throughout all the world’s stupidity, and “wonderful leaders”, I have been here. I have been here since the beginning of time. No one made me, I was just here. You must think that I’m some kind of vampiric type thing. No, vampires are a sorry form of life, or death I should say. They give a bad name to all that are truly immortal. They have to kill and stay in the darkness, where as the true immortals can eat like normal, and go wherever, whenever they like. Vampires are pathetic, and I’m sorry to say that ignorant people thought that I, Athanasia, was a disgusting vampire. When I lived in the Middle Ages, the people were than people nowadays at recognizing something supernatural. They noticed that I never aged or grew, and the vampire legends were just starting to get popular, so they began to accuse me of being one.

But in today’s “advanced” world, people just ignore the fact that others around them, and especially those annoying celebrities, never grow older, or slowly grow old. They just pass it off as “good genes” or plastic surgery. As much as people try, they will never look sixteen at forty, or “grow younger”. There will always be an air, or aura, about an older person that never goes away with time or surgeries. The only way that a person can be young in body, yet old in mind is if you are like me. Immortal.

Throughout the years, I have been adopted many, many times. My “parents” adopt me, thinking that they’re getting a darling girl with a strange name, then they notice that I never age while they do. They usually get mad and upset, and take me back. Then another young couple comes, and I’m adopted again. I really wish that I could grow old like the rest of you, but I can’t. I wish that I could experience what love for a person is. True, I have loved my multitude of parents, but I never experienced the different kind of love, like…puppy love or true love. I wish I could experience wrinkles and blemishes and makeup and hair dye. I wish that I could grow, and be able to have a child of my own. My kind can’t have children, but still, to know that if I was mortal, I could have children, that is something that people take for granted. People have children, and have abortions, and all that sadness. They don’t realize that for one night of fun, they quickly plan out over eighteen years of their life, and none of it devoted to themselves. They have children like they are dolls or toys. Yes, they’re cute and fun for a while, but once they start to make you mad, you can’t just put them in a box until you want to play with them again. I have seen this happen too many times in my long life, and everytime, it hurts me to see a life wasted. Who knows? A parent might be killing the next Einestine or Beethoven or Alexander Graham Bell. But people don’t think about that. They just think about themselves.

I’m sure you’re tired of my sad ramblings, and its nearly time for my favorite television show to come on. Television. One of my more favorite inventions. Don’t you just love those cartoons? Yes, I believe that its time you should leave. Just remember what old…I mean young…I mean…whatever. Remember what Immortal Athanasia told you. Don’t take for granted what you have, and what’s around you. Experience life to its fullest, and always take a dare. The result might not always be good, but at least you did it, and hopefully learned something from it.

And when someone asks you where you got this advise, don’t tell them you spend all day with a two thousand year old woman in a four year old’s body. They might think that you’re a bit strange.
