I Am From
By: K.S. Night

I am from
Writing until I can’t feel my fingers
Reading until my eyes won’t focus
Impersonating my own book characters
Listening to music as I fall asleep

I am from
Long, black trench coats
T-shirts that say clever things
Hugging friends tightly
Dancing to strange music

I am from
Spelling and grammar errors
Spotless houses
Stupid people
Banging on the piano

I am from
The smell of rain in the air
The feel of wind in my hair
Crash of thunder and flash of lightning
Watching the sky turn green

I am from
Hiding pain beneath false cheer
Covering gaping wounds in my soul
Holding back tears that wish to flow
Pretending everything’s all right

I am from
The pain of leaving those you love
The hurt of leaving all you know
The fear of entering a whole new world
The wish for things you cannot reach

I am from
Earrings made of paperclips
Annoying songs to encourage happiness
Trying to make things work
Hiding a broken soul

I am from
Apollo’s golden carriage
Hephaestus’ forge
The top of Mt. Olympus
The head of the Gorgon

I am from
The bottom of your closet
The depths of your imagination
Stories already told
Stories yet to tell
