Thirteen

Thirteen,

Is exactly right.

Stuck,

between a 1 and a 3.

Two young to be trusted.

Two little to be heard.

Two frustrated to succeed.

yet…
Two old to be innocent,

Two mature to believe,

Two experienced to wonder.

But if I try

To block out the misleading whispers

Of so called “FRIENDS”

Try to be free

To fly solo

To

Let. Go…

To be wise yet curious

“cool” yet smart

strong yet open.

If I try…

Maybe my

Age

won’t be

so

VITAL

Maybe my

Thoughts

won’t be

so

WRONG

Maybe my

Words

CAN be

as

POWERFUL.

I am Young.

My eyes might twinkle

As I lie on the grass – making friends with the clouds.

My smile may glitter

As rainbows arch in the sky.

My face may burst into a contagious giggle

As water tickles my freshly painted toes.

I am Old.
My blood might pound fast through my veins

As deafening sirens wail in the distance.

My head may sink low in shame

As “friends” get lost in a world of drugs, alcohol, and abuse.

My heart might swell

As children’s hands interlock – they play together with no boundaries in sight.

Girl with boy, black with white.

Thirteen is exactly right.

Stuck.

Between a 1 and a 3…

Two complicated to express in words.
